LEWISBURG, Pa. – Despite a strong performance from redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Sebastian Ferreira (Kearny, N.J./Kearny), the Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team was blanked 1-0 at Bucknell University on Saturday afternoon.
The Knights (2-5) were unable to generate much offense in the loss as the Bison (2-4-1) dominated shot attempts 16-6.
Ferreira had an excellent afternoon, tallying eight saves including a highlight-reel save on a penalty kick attempt in the 42
nd minute.
After the Bison registered the first two shots of the game, the Knights earned their first chance off of a try at the 9:40 mark from
Jeremy Despringre (Grenoble, France/Pablo Neruda). But Despringre's shot was turned away by Bucknell goalie Emmett Witmer, who finished with five saves in the contest.
Although the Knights only managed six shots, five of those attempts found their way on frame. Ferreira did well to turn away the Bison early on by rejecting several quality chances by the opposition.
At the 41:16 point of the match, the Bison were awarded a penalty kick after Ferreira attempted a late challenge for a loose ball in the box. In an effort to corral the ball, the Fairleigh Dickinson netminder made a late challenge and in the process, tripped up a Bucknell attacker.
Bucknell's Zack Rockmore stepped up to take the penalty shot and delivered a low-lining attempt toward the middle of the goal. Ferreira's initial reaction carried him to his right but the Knights' goalie managed to reach back with his left hand and swat away Rockmore's shot to keep the game knotted at 0-0.
After the teams struggled to generate quality chances in the early part of the second stanza, the Bison broke through in the 77
th minute with the game's decisive goal.
An aggressive attack by the home team's Sebastiaan Blickman was turned away by Ferreira, however, the FDU keeper was unable to control the rebound, which found its way onto the foot of Bucknell's Ben Derleth for the winning score.
The Bison defense prevented the Knights from attempting a shot over the remaining 23 minutes as they held on for the victory.
Despringre,
Daniel Lasarte (Madrid, Spain/Defiance (Ohio)) and
Marcus Marshall (Monrovia, Liberia/Burlington) each tallied two shots apiece in the loss, which accounted for all six of the team's attempts.
The Knights remain on the road for their next contest when they travel to intrastate foe Princeton University next Saturday, September 24 at 7 p.m.
