PRINCETON, N.J. –The Princeton University Tigers netted two goals in the second half to pull away with a 3-1 victory over the Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team at Roberts Stadium on Saturday night.
Senior forward
Enver Caymaz (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) scored the Knights' lone goal of the match at the 18:55 mark, which tied the game at 1-1, however, the Tigers (4-2) scored twice in the final 13 minutes pull out their fourth win in a row.
Prior to tonight's loss, the Knights were 2-0 in games this season in which they scored at least one goal.
Each team put five shots on frame in the contest, while the Tigers outshot the Knights 16-13 in total.
Princeton notched the first score of the game at the 18:38 mark when Greg Seifert buried his third goal of the season courtesy of a double assist from teammates Mark Romanowski and Bryan Windsor.
Windsor delivered a corner kick into the box and Romanowski headed the ball to Seifert, who promptly knocked it past Fairleigh Dickinson goalkeeper
Sebastian Ferreira (Kearny, N.J./Kearny).
But the Knights wasted little time answering the home team's score as Caymaz responded with the equalizer just 17 seconds later. The Knights' leading scorer split a pair of Princeton defenders and after temporarily losing the ball, regained control and buried his third tally of the season to pull his team even at 1-1.
Over the next seven minutes, a flurry of shots by the Knights nearly resulted in the go-ahead goal. After
Jeremy Despringre (Grenoble, France/Pablo Neruda) and Caymaz each had attempts blocked, sophomore
Marcus Marshall (Monrovia, Liberia/Burlington) drilled a shot which recoiled off of the crossbar and the game proceeded to intermission knotted at one.
Both goalies were forced to make saves over the first twenty minutes of the second stanza but the game remained tied.
Then at the 64:05 mark, the Tigers jumped on top with a goal by Patrick Barba. For the second time on the night, the home team's score came via a corner kick opportunity as Matthew Mangini sent a set piece into the box to Seifert, who bodied down the ball to Barba. Barba swiftly headed in the pass for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Princeton added to its lead with a goal by Benjamin Martin in the 83rd minute, which sealed the victory.
In the loss, Despringre fired a team-high three shots, while Ferreira made two saves as his record dropped to 1-4 on the campaign. Princeton netminder Josh Haberman made four stops to earn his fourth win of the season.
The Knights return home for their next two contests, beginning this Tuesday, September 27 against Lafayette at 7 p.m. Following the tilt with the Leopards, the Knights begin NEC action when they play host to Robert Morris on Friday, October 7 at 2 p.m.
