HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team forced an extra period at Hofstra on Thursday night before the Pride scored in the 95th minute to get the 2-1 win.
"First half they put us under a lot of pressure and took some time to adjust," said head coach
Eric Teepe. "We did well to get to the half tied. In the second half, I thought we settled in and created a lot of really good chances and carried the play. Unfortunately missed 2 chances to take the lead. We are getting closer but not where we want to be and we have to find a way to close out these type of games."
Fairleigh Dickinson (1-6) and Hofstra (5-2-1) combined for 47 shots – 25 for Hofstra and 22 for Fairleigh Dickinson – over the course of the 95 minutes.
Madeline Anderson scored the game-winner in the 96th minute off an assist from Noriana Radwan. It was Anderson's first goal of the season. Anderson headed the ball in at the back post from Radwan's corner.
The two sides held each other scoreless in the opening 45 minute despite Hofstra firing 13 shots on
Amanda Fitzgerald (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East), who made seven saves in the opening stanza. The Knights got off seven shots in the first half of play. Fitzgerald finished the night with 12 saves, which is a new career-high for the freshman.
The Pride broke the ice in the 78th minute on a goal from Kristin Desmond. Jill Mulholland supplied the assist on Desmond's first of the season.
Fairleigh Dickinson wasted little time in tying the game through
Connie Lewis (Outer Cove, Newfoundland/Gonzaga ) 1:03 later. Lewis was found going down the seam by a ball from
Audrey Butcher (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) that Lewis flicked into the far post to tie the score.
Both teams had chances to win the game in regulation.
Jessi Reinhardt (Friedberg, Germany/Burggymansium) was stopped by Frederike Mehring with 45 seconds to play and Mulholland put a shot high with 25 seconds left.
The Knights return to action on Sunday at Army West Point. Game time is set for 1 p.m. in West Point, New York. The game can be seen live on campusinsides.com/network/patriot_league.
