TEANECK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University men's soccer team fired 15 shots but was unable to breakthrough as they fell 1-0 to Lehigh University on Tuesday night at University Stadium.
The Knights (2-4) received a stellar effort from first-year goalkeeper
Sebastian Ferreira (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) but Lehigh's Mark Forrest's goal in the 50
th minute was the difference.
One week removed from earning NEC Rookie of the Week honors, Ferreira made six saves on the night.
Forrest, who leads the Mountain Hawks (2-3) with four goals this season, has been on a tear of late, tallying a hat trick in the team's last outing and accounting for tonight's winner.
The teams traded chances in the early going with the Knights' closest shot coming from last game's hero
Enver Caymaz (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes). In the 15
th minute, Caymaz squared up a shot from 10-yards out that was online but grazed the crossbar as it sailed high.
Just over seven minutes later, Forrest broke free in the box and lined up a header that launched off of the ground and bounced over the net and the game remained scoreless.
The Knights' best opportunity of the half came in the 43
rd minute when
Daniel Lasarte (Madrid, Spain/Defiance (Ohio)) sent a cross into the box for
Stjepan Kilic (Coppell, Texas/Coppell), who played a header which was snagged by the Lehigh goalkeeper.
Forrest came through for the Mountain Hawks with the game-winning strike at the 49:57 mark courtesy of a feed from teammate Danny Gonzalez. Gonzalez sent a timely pass to the right side of the box that hit Forrest in stride and the Mountain Hawks' leading scorer did the rest. He turned across his body and sent a rocket into the left pocket of the net for the decisive goal.
Ferreira fought to keep Lehigh off the board by making a pair of tremendous saves in the 36
th minute. Forrest and Doyle Tuvesson fired back-to-back shot attempts from point-blank range, which the freshman netminder managed to turn away.
Trailing by one, the Knights turned up the intensity on offense and rallied to pressure their opposition for much of the remaining time. The effort resulted in five second-half corner kicks for the home team but the Lehigh defense stood strong.
With 8:10 to play, FDU junior forward
Leo Saiti (Teaneck N.J./Teaneck) corralled the ball for a dangerous chance but his shot was blocked by a Lehigh defender.
The Knights' final opportunity of the match came with just 30 seconds to play when a risky ball found its way to
Javen Palmer (London, England/Sedgehill), who was unable to square up a quality shot as his attempt sailed wide right.
The Knights outshot the Mountain Hawks 15-14 in the contest, however, they were outnumbered 7-2 in on-frame attempts.
The next two games for the Knights are on the road with tests coming at Bucknell on Saturday, September 17 and Princeton on Saturday, September 24. Check back to FDUKnights.com for live coverage links.
