SMITHFIELD, R.I. - In a doubleheader that changed dates and ultimately venues, Fairleigh Dickinson dropped both halves of the doubleheader at Bryant on Sunday afternoon. The games were supposed to be played back on April 3 in Hackensack, New Jersey.
The two teams came in tied for fourth in the Northeast Conference standings.
Fairleigh Dickinson now sits at 12-30 overall and 5-7 in NEC play. Bryant is now 11-33 and 9-7 in the NEC. Bryant's regular season is over.
The Bulldogs scored in the latter stages in both games to secure the doubleheader sweep.
Game 1 (Bryant 3, Fairleigh Dickinson 2)
Bryant pushed one across in the top of the second inning to open the scoring. Rachel Moore grounded out to bring in Mollie Anderson.
Kellie Natham (Arcadia, Calif./Maranatha) quickly put the Knights in front in the bottom half of the inning. The freshman hit a two-run home run to make it 2-1 Fairleigh Dickinson.
Reanna Cervantes (Upland, Calif./Upland) scored on the homer after she was hit by a pitch. Natham's homer was her fourth of the season and her 23rd and 24th RBIs of the season.
Both teams were held scoreless until Bryant scored the would-be winning run in the top of the sixth. The Bulldogs used a single, a wild pitch, sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly to get the run across.
Fairleigh Dickinson got the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh after a
Courtney Slye (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley) single but the Knights left Slye stranded at first.
Ellie Madsen (7-11) went the distance for Bryant to earn the win.
Loren Stavrou (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson Classical) (4-11) allowed the three runs over five-plus innings with four strike outs and three hits.
Game 2 (Bryant 5, Fairleigh Dickinson 3)
Similar to game one, Bryant opened the scoring. The Bulldogs got a run across in the first inning.
The second inning saw the Bulldogs tack on two more runs with the help of an error and a sacrifice fly to lead 3-0.
Reanna Cervantes (Upland, Calif./Upland) hit a solo home run to lead-off the bottom of the second inning to open the scoring for the Knights. It was the freshman's fourth of the season, which is second on the team.
Madison Lerma (Escondido, Calif./Escondido) and Cervantes led off the fourth with hits. Lerma came around to score on a groundout by
Cheryl Lopez (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville). Cervantes came around the score when
Courtney Slye (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley) reached on an error, which made the score 4-3.
Hayley Bottino provided the Bulldogs with an insurance run with a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning.
Fairleigh Dickinson had a chance to do some damage in the bottom of the fifth.
Francine Villalobos (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) and Lerma singled with two outs. Cervantes then walked to load the bases.
Kellie Natham (Arcadia, Calif./Maranatha) then grounded out to end the threat and the frame.
The Knights had runners on the sixth and seventh innings but could not score.
Colby Norris (3-11) pitched three innings of relief and collected the win for Bryant. Stavrou (4-12) took the loss in game two also. The senior pitched a complete game, struck out four and allowed five runs -- four earned.
Fairleigh Dickinson returns to action next weekend for the final four games of the regular season. The first two will a doubleheader at Saint Francis U on Saturday, May 7 and the final two will be at Robert Morris on Sunday, May 8. Both doubleheaders are scheduled to start at 12 p.m.
