Softball Topped by Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Fairleigh Dickinson softball team had its two-game winning streak come to an end at Stony Brook on Tuesday afternoon. The Seawolves beat the Knights 11-3 in five innings.

Stony Brook (12-17-1) got on the board early with two runs in its half of the first inning. After the lead-off batter was retired, the Seawolves worked a walk and then Diane Caruso doubled to left that drove in Kellie Reynolds. Irene Rivera then singled to left that allowed Caruso to score.

Fairleigh Dickinson (7-22) got the score to 2-1 in the top of the third. The Knights got a walk and a steal -- her 20th -- from Madelaine Wilen (Bakersfield, Calif./Ridgeview) and a groundout moved Wilen to third with two outs. Madison Lerma (Escondido, Calif./Escondido) then stepped in and drove in Wilen with a single that got through the left side. It was Lerma's ninth RBI of the season and Wilen's team-leading 16th run scored.

The Seawolves answered in their half and extended their lead. Two walks and a sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third for Kim Ragazzo. Ragazzo singled to center to make the score 4-1 in favor of the home side. A Knight error allowed Patty Borges to reach, who would score he fourth run of the inning on a double. Reynolds doubled to left center to bring in Alexandra Pisciotta to make it 5-1.

Reanna Cervantes (Upland, Calif./Upland), who walked and steal second, scored on a Stephanie Collins (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) single in the fourth. Collins' fifth RBI of the season and Cervantes' 11th run scored. Stony Book would answer with a run in the bottom half to make the scoreboard read 8-2.

Wilen homered in the top of the fifth to get the Knights to within five at 8-3. It was Wilen's third of the season and 21st of her career. The senior also broke the program's total bases record with 260 in the process.

Stony Brook would score three times in the bottom half of the fifth. The Seawolves recorded one hit and got benefited from two Knights errors. Borges singled to center to drive in two to make it 11-3 and give Stony Brook the win.

Loren Stavrou (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson Classical) (1-7) started for Fairleigh Dickinson and allowed four earned runs -- seven overall -- over three innings and recorded the loss. Jane Sallen (9-10) went four innings and allowed the two runs to pick up the win.

Fairleigh Dickinson returns to the diamond this weekend for a pair of Northeast Conference doubleheaders on the road. Fairleigh Dickinson visits Robert Morris on Saturday, April 9 and Saint Francis on April 10.
