Softball Walks-Off in Game: Falls in Game Two on Senior Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HACKENSACK, N.J. - The Fairleigh Dickinson softball team split its third consecutive Northeast Conference doubleheader on Saturday when the Knights won game one against Wagner and lost game two in six innings on senior day.

The Knights' softball program honored seniors; Emma Deluca (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township), Courtney Slye (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley), Loren Stavrou (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson Classical) and Madelaine Wilen (Bakersfield, Calif./Ridgeview) prior to game one.

The split puts Fairleigh Dickinson's record at 12-28 overall and 5-5 in the NEC. Wagner is now 19-24 and 4-8 in NEC play.

Game One (Fairleigh Dickinson 1, Wagner 0)
A senior and a freshman played key roles in the Knights' win in game one of the afternoon.

Playing her final home game, Stavrou (4-10) hurled a complete game shutout. The Long Beach, California native struck out a career-high nine and scattered five hits. Wagner got one runner to third base the entire game -- in the fourth.

Fairleigh Dickinson had one hit prior to the seventh inning -- a Cheryl Lopez (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) single in the second. In the seventh, Reanna Cervantes (Upland, Calif./Upland) tripled to left field with one out. The next batter was freshman Kellie Natham (Arcadia, Calif./Maranatha). The first year Knights singled down the left field line on a 0-2 pitch to score Cervantes and get the Knights the 1-0 win in walk-off fashion.

The RBI was Natham's 22nd of the season and Cervantes scored her 16th run of her freshman campaign.

Morgan Brown (7-13) pitched all 6 1/3 innings for Wagner and took the loss.

Game Two (Wagner 9, Fairleigh Dickinson 0 -- 6 innings)
Neither team scored in the first inning of game two. Wagner then struck for seven runs in the top of the second inning and then added two more in the sixth to earn the run-rule win.

The first six Seahawks to bat in the inning all reached, which led to three runs and Knights' starter Cheryl Lopez (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) being replace by Baylee Ports (Shaftsbury, Vt./Mount Anthony Union). Brianna Tredway -- the first batter to face Ports -- hit the first pitch of the at-bat and cleared the bases with a double to make it 6-0. A sacrifice fly capped the scoring in the inning.

Wagner starter McKaleigh Goodale (9-9) limited the Knights' offense to just one hit over six innings. Goodale needed 61 pitches to complete the six-inning shutout.

In the sixth, the Seahawks added runs on a fielder's choice and a double steal play prior to the third out being recorded.

Lopez (5-11) was charged with five earned runs over one-plus innings. The junior allowed two hits and walked four.

Fairleigh Dickinson returns to action tomorrow when they take on Bryant up in Smithfield, Rhode Island. The doubleheader was moved from Teaneck to Smithfield due to impending rain in the Teaneck area. First pitch of the twin bill is scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday morning.
