Softball Takes Two from Saint Peter's

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HACKENSACK, N.J. - The Fairleigh Dickinson softball team got back in the win column and swept the visiting Saint Peter's Peacocks in a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at FDU Softball Field.

The Knights scored in everything inning in game one to earn the win in five innings. Fairleigh Dickinson then hung on in game two after a late rally from Saint Peter's.

Fairleigh Dickinson moves to 9-24 with the two wins and Saint Peter's drops to 0-27 with the losses.

Game 1 (Fairleigh Dickinson 9, Saint Peter's 0 -- Final in 5 innings)
Fairleigh Dickinson wasted no time to get on the board as the Knights scored three in the first inning and four in the second to jump out on the visitors.

Madelaine Wilen (Bakersfield, Calif./Ridgeview) led off the game with a single and then stole second base -- 22nd of the season. Francine Villalobos (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) was then hit by a pitch to make it first and second. Madison Lerma (Escondido, Calif./Escondido) moved the two over to second and third before Kellie Nathm walked; Wilen scored on a passed ball that was ball four. Reanna Cervantes (Upland, Calif./Upland) then singled in Villalobos and Natham, who moved to 2nd on the wild pitch.

The Knights got the first two hitters to reach in the second -- Cheryl Lopez (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and Courtney Slye (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley) -- before Wilen singled to shortstop to load the bases. Wilen finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Villalobos drove in a pair with a single on a bunt. Two batters later, Natham singled to center field to being in Wilen to make it 6-0. Villalobos scored when Cervantes drove in her third RBI of the game with sacrifice fly to center.

Slye made it 8-0 with a solo home run to left-center field. It was her second of the season. Villalobos scored her third run of the day when she forced a throwing error by the Saint Peter's second baseman after a pop out.

The combination of Lopez and Baylee Ports (Shaftsbury, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) stifled the Peacocks' offense. Lopez did not give up a hit in her two innings of work and Ports (1-1) earned the win -- first of her career -- while giving up two hits over three innings and striking out four.

Game 2 (Fairleigh Dickinson 4, Saint Peter's 3)
Both teams got on the board in the initial frame of the game two. Saint Peter's got a RBI single from Sam Storms and Fairleigh Dickinson got its run when Madison Lerma (Escondido, Calif./Escondido) singled through the left side to bring Madelaine Wilen (Bakersfield, Calif./Ridgeview).

Reanna Cervantes (Upland, Calif./Upland) hit her second home run this season that brought home Kellie Natham (Arcadia, Calif./Maranatha) as well to make it 3-1 Fairleigh Dickinson in the third inning. Cervantes leads the team with 24 RBI.

Cheryl Lopez (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) belted a solo home run, which was also her second of the season, to center field to give Fairleigh Dickinson a three-run advantage heading into the seventh at 4-1.

Lopez would come on to pitch in the top of the seventh after taking over for Loren Stavrou (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson Classical), who started, and Baylee Ports (Shaftsbury, Vt./Mount Anthony Union).

In the top of the seventh, Saint Peter's got a lead-off double from Crystal Carlucci and Alyssa Cuevas got on via an error with no one out. After Lopez got a strike out, she walked the next two batters to force in a run and make the scoreboard read 4-2. With the bases loaded, Jackie Riley grounded into a fielder's choice at second to allow a run to score to make it a one-run game. After a walk to load the bases, Lopez got Lee Harrison to strike out swinging to end the game.

Stavrou, who notched her first career hit in game one, (2-8) picked up the win after going five innings, striking out three and allowing one run on two hits. Lopez (1) picked up her first save her career after getting out of the jam in the seventh.

The Knights return to action this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders. Saturday will see the Fairleigh Dickinson host Central Connecticut at 1 p.m. at FDU Softball Field. The Knights will then travel to Sacred Heart for a doubleheader on Sunday.
