Box Score 2 BROOKLYN -- In its first two games since April 5, the Fairleigh Dickinson softball team dropped a pair of games to Northeast Conference foe LIU Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon in Brooklyn.
The Knights managed only one hit in the first game and could not hold on to a 5-0 lead in the nightcap. LIU Brooklyn won 8-0 in the opener and 7-5 in the second game.
The two losses push the Knights' record to 7-24 overall and 2-2 in NEC play. The Blackbirds are now 17-24 overall and 6-2 in NEC play.
Game 1 (LIU Brooklyn 8, FDU 0 -- 6 innings)LIU Brooklyn struck for five runs in the first inning. A walk, single and a fielder's choice loaded the bases before the Blackbirds' Kylie Mulholland walked to force in a run. A single from Angie Vazquez made it 2-0 and two batters later Kayla Gloady doubled in two to conclude the scoring.
The Blackbirds scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Ashley Sandoval-Colon singled in the fourth to bring in Whitney West. Vazquez hit a solo home run in fifth to make it 7-0. Patricia Griffin singled through the right side to bring the winning run.
Cheryl Lopez (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) had the lone hit for the Knights and
Francine Villalobos (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) and
Holly Mercier (Corona, Calif./Santiago) worked to give the Knights its three base runners on the afternoon.
Erynn Sobieski (10-16) got the win for LIU after allowing just three base runners and struck out right over six innings.
Loren Stavrou (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson Classical) (1-8) took the loss for Fairleigh Dickinson, allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits and two walks.
Game 2 (LIU Brooklyn 7, Fairleigh Dickinson 5)In the second game of the doubleheader, Fairleigh Dickinson did all of its damage in the third inning, but could not hold on to the lead.
The Knights got a one-out double from
Courtney Slye (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley), who was driven in by
Madelaine Wilen (Bakersfield, Calif./Ridgeview) with a single to take a 1-0 lead. A single from
Francine Villalobos (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) and an error allowed
Madison Lerma (Escondido, Calif./Escondido) to reach and load the bases. Two batters later,
Reanna Cervantes (Upland, Calif./Upland) delivered a two-out triple to clear the bases. Cervantes has 19 RBI to lead the team.
Mercier then doubled to left field to bring in Cervantes and make it 5-0 Fairleigh Dickinson. It was Mercier's ninth of the season and Cervantes' 11th run scored.
LIU Brooklyn responded by scoring three runs of their own in the bottom half. The first run for the Blackbirds came on a wild pitch. Celinna Cosio then tripled to right field that plated Victoria Zamora and Ashley Sandoval-Colon to make it 5-3 Knights.
Cosio tied the game at five with a two-run home run to center field with one out in the fifth inning. Evie Claussell -- a pinch hitter -- knocked in a run with a groundout and Zamora tacked another with a singled down the left field line.
Cheryl Lopez (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) (5-10) took the loss for the Knights after allowing six earned runs over 5 1/3 innings.
Baylee Ports (Shaftsbury, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) pitched the final two-thirds of an inning. Erynn Sobieski (11-16) came on in relief of starter Tallie Woodson to pick up the win, her second of the day. Sobieski allowed one hit and a walk over four innings.
Fairleigh Dickinson returns to action on Tuesday when they host the Peacocks of Saint Peter's at FDU Softball Field. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m.
