Box Score 2 BALTIMORE, MD. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson softball team split its doubleheader with Maryland-Baltimore County on Sunday. The Knights are now 1-5 on the young season. UMBC moves to 5-11 on 2016.
Game 1 - UMBC 9, FDU 0 F/5
After the Knights went scoreless in the top half of the first; the Retrievers struck for two in the bottom half when Carly Lesko drove in two with a single. UMBC then scored five runs in the bottom of the second. The Retrievers scored twice on an RBI single from Morgan Peyou -- would later score on a sacrifice fly. Kaelin Jackson then homered to finish the scoring.
UMBC then scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to build a 9-0 lead.
Fairleigh Dickinson was unable to score in the top of the fifth, which gave UMBC the 9-0 win via the 8-run mercy rule after five innings.
Madison Lerma (Escondido, Calif./Escondido),
Kellie Natham (Arcadia, Calif./Maranatha) and
Reanna Cervantes (Upland, Calif./Upland) were the only three Knights to record a hit in the game.
Loren Stavrou (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson Classical) (0-2) took the loss after allowing six earned runs in two innings of work.
Game 2 - FDU 7, UMBC 6
The Knights jumped on the Retrievers early in the second game.
Fairleigh Dickinson scored three runs in the first inning and another in the second to take a 3-0 lead.
Madison Lerma (Escondido, Calif./Escondido) scored on a
Kellie Natham (Arcadia, Calif./Maranatha) RBI sacrifice fly.
Courtney Slye (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley) then doubled in
Francine Villalobos (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) to make it 2-0 and Madalaine Wilen scored on a
Reanna Cervantes (Upland, Calif./Upland) sacrifice fly. Villalobos came up in the second with a runner on and connected for her first home run of the season.
UMBC got one back in the bottom half of the third inning. Fairleigh Dickinson moved the lead back to three when Lerma knocked in
Emma Deluca (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township).
Lerma singled to left in the fourth that brought in
Cheryl Lopez (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) to make it 6-1 in favor of the Knights.
The Retrievers got two back in the bottom of the fourth by Carly Lesko and Kaelin Jackson hitting back-to-back solo home runs.
Natham knocked in Wilen -- scored twice in game two -- in the top of the fifth with a double. Natham leads the team in RBI with five
-- two in game two -- through six games.
UMBC would not go quietly, however. The Retrievers scored twice in the bottom of the sixth. The first run came on a sacrifice fly by Chelsie Delperuto and the second run via a single from Tori Alexander. That made the score 7-5 Fairleigh Dickinson.
The Knights went scoreless in their half of the seventh. UMBC would then have the two on and one out when Kelley Lane singled to right center to bring in O'Malley and make it 7-6 Fairleigh Dickinson.
Cheryl Lopez (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) would then get Jaclyn Buckley to fly out and Delperuto to groundout back to the mound to wrap up the Knights' first win of the season.
Lopez (1-1) went the distance, allowing six runs and 11 hits while striking out three.
Fairleigh Dickinson hits the road again this coming week when the Knights will travel out to Los Angeles, California for the Loyola Marymount Tournament to play Harvard, Monmouth and the host Lions twice each from March 11-15.
