Baseball Drops Series at Longwood

Box Score

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team fell to Longwood on Sunday afternoon by a score of 5-3.  The Knights (1-5) plated two runs in the top of the eighth inning to tie the game, but the Lancers (7-4) scored twice in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead.

With one out in the eighth, senior Patrick McClure (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius ) and sophomore Jason Fatzinger (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) both singled to start the Knights' rally.  Pinch hitter Joel Roman (East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford) reached on an error, which scored McClure and advanced Fatzinger to third, he where he would eventually score on a wild pitch.

The Lancers answered and broke the 3-3 tie in the bottom of the eighth.  A leadoff single, passed ball and sacrifice bunt moved the go-ahead run to third base with one out.  After a pitching change by FDU, Longwood's Michael Osinski singled to right center to drive in the runner from third, however he was thrown out by senior Shane Siebler (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) as he tried to stretch his hit into a double.  Longwood's next batter, Alex Lewis, added an insurance run with a home run to left field.

The Knights were led offensively by redshirt junior Ryan Brennan (Mooresville, N.C./Mooresville) who collected two more hits to raise his season batting average to .375.  Senior John Giakas (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville), McClure and Fatzinger also had hits for FDU.  Giakas drove in FDU's lone run with an RBI in the fourth inning.

Redshirt junior Logan Frati (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport/South Manor) started for the Knights and pitched six strong innings limiting the Lancers to one earned run on seven hits.  Frati struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Junior Danny Demetrops (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) (1-1) took the loss for the Knights.  He surrendered one run in 1.1 innings of work.

Freshman Tim Quinn (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) relieved Demetrops in the eighth and allowed one run on two hits while recording two outs.

Cameron Trichka (1-0) earned the win for the Lancers with three innings of relief.  He allowed just one earned run on two hits.  Cody Boydstun earned the save, his fourth of the season.

The Knights will return to action on Tuesday afternoon with a non-conference game at Lafayette.  They will then host St. John's at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex on Wednesday, March 9 for the2016 Home Opener.
