Box Score FARMVILLE, Va. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team fell to Longwood on Friday afternoon by a score of 4-3. The game is the first in a three-game series between the Knights (1-3) and the Lancers (5-4).
Trailing 4-2 heading to the top of the ninth, the Knights scored a run on a wild pitch and then loaded the bases with two outs, but were unable to push across the tying run against the Lancers.
Longwood's Travis Burnette worked 8.2 innings and allowed three runs on four hits and five walks. He was relieved by Cody Boydstun with two outs in the ninth. Boydstun surrendred a hit to sophomore
Jason Fatzinger (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) and then hit senior
Shane Siebler (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) with a pitch to load the bases before finally closing out the game on a ground ball.
The FDU pitching staff limited the Big South member Lancers to just eight hits and four runs. Freshman
Corey Zeller (Carroll, Ohio/Bloom Carroll) made his second career start and tossed five innings allowing just one run. Zeller limited Longwood to four hits and a walk. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision.
He was relieved by freshman P.J. Weeks who pitched 1.1 innings and surrendered three runs on three hits. Weeks (0-1) was credited with the loss.
Junior
Danny Demetrops (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) entered the game in the seventh and recorded one out before being replaced by freshman
Tim Quinn (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) who retired the final batter of the seventh and then worked a one-two-three eighth inning. Quinn did not allow a run or hit and struck out two of the four batters he faced.
Offensively, redshirt junior
Ryan Brennan (Mooresville, N.C./Mooresville) collected two of the Knights five hits. He also drove in a run. Senior
Dylan Sprague (Brunswick, N.Y./Averill Park) picked up an RBI on a fourth inning double that drove in senior
Joel Roman (East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford) and gave the Knights an early 1-0 lead.
Fatzinger and McCann also had hits for the Knights.
Burnette (1-1) picked up the win and Boydstun earned the save (2) for the Lancers.
The series will continue with a single game on Saturday at 2 p.m. and then conclude with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
