Softball Drops Pair to Samford and Manhattan Sunday

QUEENS, N.Y. - The final day of the St. John's Invitational the Knights fell to both Samford and Manhattan on Sunday.

Game 1
Samford scored in each of the first three innings to build an 8-0 lead over Fairleigh Dickinson and went on to win 10-3.

Samford (15-13) was led by Caitlin Bice offensively. Bice went 3-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored. Hannah Trembley went 4-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Lexi Higgins also drove in two for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs scored twice in the first inning, three times in the second and three more in the third. Higgins drove in both the runs in the first with a single. Trombley drove in a run and scored a run in the second. Bice homered hit a three-run home run in the third to make it 8-0 Samford.

Courtney Slye (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley) forced in the first run for Fairleigh Dickinson (3-13) with a bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning. Madison Lerma (Escondido, Calif./Escondido) singled on the first pitch of the at-bat to drive in Kellie Natham (Arcadia, Calif./Maranatha) and make it 8-2.

The Knights pushed another run across in the fifth. Natham knocked in Francine Villalobos (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) on a full-count offering with a single to right center.

Samford scored twice to end the game in the bottom of the fifth. Bice doubled to left to bring in Dowdy and Trombley brought in Brice to give the Bulldogs the 10-3 win.

Grey Adams (1-1) picked up the win and went five innings and giving up two earned runs while striking out six. Madison Lerma (Escondido, Calif./Escondido) (2-3) toke the loss after giving up four earned runs in an inning and a third.

Game 2
Manhattan started fast in the final game of the day by scoring five in the first two innings and then the Jaspers scored four in the fifth to end the game in five by the final score of 11-3.

Stephanie Reinhardt paced the offense for Manhattan (9-7) on the afternoon with three RBI and went 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk. Jenn Vazquez had two RBI and a run scored. Four other Jaspers drove in a run.

Reanna Cervantes (Upland, Calif./Upland) and Cheryl Lopez (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) drove in the two runs for Fairleigh Dickinson (3-13). Cervantes was also 2-for-2 at the plate.

Reinhardt doubled Vazquez and Elena Bowman home in the first inning with two outs. In the second, Emily Cutler stole second and came around to score on a throwing error and Rachael Mumma scored on the same play after an error by the Knights. Bowman, who was batting when both scored, homered to center field to make it 5-0 Manhattan.

Fairleigh Dickinson came back in the bottom of the second and made it a game. Kellie Natham (Arcadia, Calif./Maranatha) and Madison Lerma (Escondido, Calif./Escondido) reached to start the inning. Lerma scored on a Cervantes single to left. Lopez came up with one away and singled to right field to score Cervantes, which cut the Jasper lead to 5-2.

After both teams, went scoreless in the third, Manhattan scored twice on a single from Vazquez down the left field line to make it 7-2.

The Knights did not respond this time and Manhattan tacked on four more in the top of the fifth. Kat Prevo scored on a ground out to make it 8-2. Cutler singled to center that brought in Shannon Puthe that made it 9-2 Jaspers. After two walks and a popup, Briana Matazinsky singled up the middle to score Cutler. Reinhardt then walked with the bases loaded to give the Jaspers an 11-2 lead and win.

Stephanie Kristo (4-2) got the win for Manhattan after throwing five innings and allowing just runs on five hits. Loren Stavrou (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson Classical) (0-4) gave up four runs in four innings and picked up the loss.

The Knights open the home portion of the schedule on Wednesday when they are scheduled to host Rider at 3 p.m.
