Box Score LOS ANGELES - A five-run first inning for Monmouth proved to be too much for Fairleigh Dickinson in the first game for both at the Loyola Marymount Tournament on Friday afternoon. The Hawks scored multiple runs in the third and fourth innings as well to win 12-0 in five innings.
The Hawks, which sent nine hitters to the plate, scored their five runs on three RBI singles and a two-run double in the opening frame. Ashalynn Umiamaka had the second of the back-to-back RBI singles and Amanda Riley doubled down the left field line to make it 5-0. The Knights did get two runners on in the top of the first but stranded them both.
Fairleigh Dickinson's (1-6) best chance to score came in the third inning.
Madison Lerma (Escondido, Calif./Escondido) and
Francine Villalobos (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) singled to give the Knights first and second with one away.
Madelaine Wilen (Bakersfield, Calif./Ridgeview) then singled to center; Lerma tried to score from second on the play but was thrown out at home.
Kellie Natham (Arcadia, Calif./Maranatha) filed out to end the inning.
Monmouth (5-4) tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third. Umiamaka reached on an error, then scored on a double from Jill Freese. Freese scored when Nicole Wieczorek homered to left to make it 8-0 Monmouth.
Baylee Ports (Shaftsbury, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) came in for
Loren Stavrou (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson Classical), who started for the Knights, and loaded the bases but got out of the inning.
Four more runs from Monmouth in the bottom of the fourth made it 12-0 for the Hawks. The first four batter of the inning reached and came around to score.
Stavrou
(0-3) took the loss after giving up eight runs in two and third innings. Wilen went 2-for-2 on the day for the Knights. Five other Knights had a hit.
