Box Score EMMITSBURG, Md. - The Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball team got to within eight in the fourth quarter but the Knights scored two points over the final 4:50 and lost 71-55 at Mount St. Mary's on Monday night.
The Knights lead at the half by a point, 35-34, then scored seven points in the third quarter and found themselves down 56-42 heading into the fourth quarter. The Mount opened the third quarter on a 16-4 run to take the lead back -- the lead changed five times in the opening 20 minutes.
Mount St. Mary's (7-18, 5-9 NEC) extended the lead to 17 inside the opening 20 seconds of the fourth quarter with a three-point play by Alexis Carter -- who had a game-high 23 points. Fairleigh Dickinson (10-17, 7-7 NEC) scored five straight points -- two from
Madelynn Comly (Littlestown, Pa./Delone Catholic) and there from
Kelsey Cruz (Chester, Va./Lloyd C. Bird) -- to cut the lead to 59-47 with 8:19 to play.
Back-to-back jumpers from Cruz -- led the Knights with 20 -- on back-to-back possession got the Knights to within eight at 61-53.
The Knights missed their next eight shots -- four on one possession -- while the Mountaineers moved their lead back out to 10 and then 18, 71-53, with 15 seconds to play. A
Natalie Zamora (Albuquerque, N.M./St. Pius X) jumper with nine seconds to play snapped the drought for the Knights.
Erika Livermore (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) was the other Knight in double figures along with Cruz. Livermore had her 49th career double-double with 11 points (5-of-16) and 13 rebounds. Comly finished six points (1-of-8) prior to fouling out.
Anastasia Williams (Central Islip, N.Y./St. John the Baptist Diocesan) added five points and seven rebounds off the bench and
Kiana Brown (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) had two points, four assists, four steals and three rebounds.
Fairleigh Dickinson had a season-high 28 offensive rebounds -- 46 total -- but the Knights shot 13-percent (2-of-15) from behind the arc and 30-percent (21-of-70) for the game. Mount St. Mary's shot 45-percent (9-of-20) from three and 47-percent (25-of-53) overall for the game.
The Knights return to action on Saturday, February 20 when they take on Sacred Heart at 4 p.m. The game will be on ESPN3. Prior to the game, the Knights will honor Cruz and Livermore for senior day.
