LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball team got to as close as five points in the fourth quarter at 68-63 on a
Kiana Brown three-pointer, but Monmouth hit four free throws in the final 1:24 to hold off Fairleigh Dickinson 72-63.
"We had a good effort tonight and we are doing so many things well", said head coach
Peter Cinella. "We got within five and got a big defensive rebound but the turnovers are just too much right now."
The Knights had a chance to get within one possession but turned the ball over after getting a defensive stop with the score 68-63 with one minute to play.
Madelynn Comly led all scorers with a new career high 16 points. The sophomore added four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Brown was also in double figures with 11 points.
Amina Markovic scored 10 points for the second time this season and added eight rebounds.
Fairleigh Dickinson (2-7) tried to erase an 11-point fourth quarter deficit. Comly scored the first seven points of the quarter for the Knights and hit a three-pointer with 2:55 to play to cut it to 66-60.
Alania Jarnot scored two of her 12 points to answer Comly's three before Brown's three cut it to five.
The Knights came out of the locker room down six and cut the deficit to five on three different occasions in the third quarter.
Elise Graham made it a five-point game, 42-37, with 4:01 to play. A quick 7-0 run from Monmouth (4-5) gave the home side a 12-point lead, 49-37, with two minutes to play.
A three from Jarnot made it a 57-43 game heading into the final 10 minutes.
Monmouth as paced by Kayla Shaw, who scored 13 points in 25 minutes off the bench. Taylor Nason had six points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals for the Hawks as well.
The Knights return to action on Tuesday night when they travel to Saint Peter's in Jersey City. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
