BRONX, N.Y. – The Fairleigh Dickinson men's basketball team dropped its final game of the weekend at the Johnny Bach Classic, 84-58, to Saint Peter's on Sunday afternoon at Rose Hill Gymnasium.
The Knights (2-3) struggled to contain the Peacocks' (2-2) three-point prowess and balanced scoring attack, which saw six players score in double figures. Trevis Wyche topped the Peacocks' scorers with 17 points, while Nick Griffin added 16 tallies. Wyche and Griffin each knocked down three trifectas as the Peacocks totaled 10 in the win.
Additionally, the Peacocks did an excellent job of protecting the basketball, logging just five turnovers in the win. Quadir Welton's nine rebounds led the Peacocks to a 40-21 advantage over the Knights on the glass. Welton finished with 12 points and six assists to go along with the rebounding-effort.
Darian Anderson led the Knights in scoring with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers.
Stephan Jiggetts and
Mike Holloway both tallied double-figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Holloway also added five rebounds to his ledger in the loss.
"We were just obviously a step slow to everything today defensively. We dug ourselves a hole that we could never recover from," coach
Greg Herenda said following the loss. "I am still very proud of some of the things we accomplished here in this tournament. We had some great individual and team efforts. What this team needs most right now is time to rest and recover -- and then we'll go back to work."
Saint Peter's opened with a pair of treys by Patterson and Wyche 6-0 before Anderson answered with the Knights' first bucket.
Anderson and Holloway accounted for the Knights' first 11 points before Jiggetts gave the team its first lead with a pair of free throws, 13-12, with 13:02 to play in the opening half.
With the Knights trailing 20-19, the Peacocks used a 17-6 run to build a comfortable lead led by Wyche's eight points. Wyche paced Saint Peter's in the first half with a game-high 13 points at the break.
After an alley-oop from Jiggetts to
Kaleb Bishop, the Peacocks connected on back-to-back treys as they broke the game open and built a 43-27 cushion with two minutes to play in the first.
Saint Peter's was locked in from long range as they buried six of their eight attempts from downtown, while also taking care of business from the free throw line with a 9-for-11 performance. Meanwhile, the Knights struggled mightily from behind the arc and finished the game just 3-of-14 (21.4%) from three-point land.
With their big advantage from long range the Peacocks carried a 49-31 lead into the locker room.
The Peacocks' attack forced the Knights to commit 12 first half fouls, including seven charged to the Knights' three starting guards. Both teams shot over 50 percent from the floor in the half as the Knights went 12-of-24 (50%) and the Peacocks 17-of-29 (58.6%).
Anderson topped the Knights with 11 first-half points on 4-of-7 shooting.
Portley continued the Peacocks' success from long range by knocking down a three-pointer to open the half.
Saint Peter's netted the first five points of the half, before Jiggetts stopped the spurt with a floater in the lane. However, the Knights were unable to chip away as the Peacocks maintained their 20-plus point advantage for most of the remainder of the game en route to the victory.
Defensively, the Knights managed to cool the Peacocks' three-point shooting and held their opposition to 2-of-15 from downtown in the second half.
The Knights outscored the Peacocks 34-24 in the paint and shot a higher percentage overall -- 50 percent to 46.4 percent -- but could not overcome the disparity from long range and the free throw line. Saint Peter's converted 22-29 (75.9%) from the free throw line to go along with its 10 three-pointers.
Fairleigh Dickinson has a 10-day break before they return to action on November 30 with a trip to West Point, N.Y. to take on Army.
