SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team dropped a tough road contest to Bryant, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon.
The Knights fell 25-17 in the first set, 25-13 in the second set and 25-19 in the third set. The loss drops them to 2-20 overall and 1-5 in the Northeast Conference. Bryant improves to 12-11 on the season and 3-2 in conference play.
The Bulldogs set the tone early in the first set, coming out to score three points right away.
Rebecca Sabol (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) put the Knights on the board with a kill and a
Taylor Wyckoff (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) kill brought them within one point.
The Bulldogs continued to build upon their lead, taking a 16-7 lead before the Knights called a timeout to regroup. Fairleigh Dickinson added three points right out of the timeout, and went on to score another four points in a row to cut Bryant's lead to 17-14 on another Sabol kill. The Bulldogs took their own timeout and outscored the Knights 7-3 to win the first set.
The second set of the day started out even and was tied several times before the Bulldogs started to pull away. The Knights took a brief 7-6 lead on an
Annabel Reyes (Teaneck, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) kill before Bryant tied things up and went on to score 10 straight points to grab the 17-7 advantage. The Bulldogs added three straight points to close out the second set with a win.
Fairleigh Dickinson fell behind 4-0 to start the third set and was never able to take the lead, despite bringing the score within one point.
The Bulldogs built up a 10-5 lead following a Sydney Gorski kill but the Knights responded with three points to cut the lead to 10-8. A kill from
Annabel Reyes (Teaneck, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) gave the Knights a spark and they went on to score four straight and cut Bryant's lead to 19-18.
The Bulldogs called a timeout and then outscore the Knights 6-1 to win the set and the match.
Wyckoff had six kills and two blocks for Fairleigh Dickinson.
Kirstin Trabert (Corona, Calif./Norco) added 14 assists and
Savanna Wray (Peoria, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) tallied 11 digs.
The Bulldogs hit at a .280 clip compared to the Knights' .070.
Fairleigh Dickinson is back in action on Wednesday at Manhattan for a non-conference matchup at 7 p.m.
