Knights Battle Colonials to 1-1 Draw

HACKENSACK, N.J. – In the Northeast Conference opener for both Fairleigh Dickinson and Robert Morris, the Knights and Colonials played all 110 possible minutes and came away with a 1-1 draw.

Both Fairleigh Dickinson (2-7-1, 0-0-1 NEC) and Robert Morris (3-5-2, 0-0-1 NEC) earn one point in the NEC standings.

Casey Abelein (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermeulen) got the Knights an early 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season in the 11th minute. The header came off a corner kick from Daniel Lasarte (Madrid, Spain/Defiance (Ohio)), which was his first assist of the season, that found Abelein in the six-yard box close to the back post.

Fairleigh Dickinson enjoyed the lead at the halftime intermission and in the opening minutes of the second half.

Robert Morris tied the game on a goal from Keane McIvor in the 57th minute. McIvor settled a pass from Bayley Winkel at the top of the 18-yard box and beat Sebastian Ferreira (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) to his left. The goal was McIvor's first of 2016.

The Knights had chances late in the second half and overtime to try and win the game but were unable to find the back of the net.

Winter Fondi made three saves in the last minutes to stop Jamie Leddy (Bateman’s Bay, Australia/Bateman’s Bay), Wojciech Piwowarczyk (Garfield, N.J./Garfield) and Abelein from giving Fairleigh Dickinson the late lead. The Knights had three more chances in the second overtime but none found their way on frame to test Fondi, who made eight saves on the afternoon.

Fairleigh Dickinson returns to action on Sunday to face the Terriers of St. Francis Brooklyn at 1 p.m. over in Brooklyn, New York.
