EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team will be the number four seed in the upcoming Northeast Conference Tournament after dropping a 2-1 decision at Mount St. Mary's in the regular-season finale.
Fairleigh Dickinson (7-11-1, 5-2-1 NEC) struck first in the 12th minute on
Jessi Reinhardt (Freiburg, Germany/Burggymansium)'s fifth of the season. Reinhardt took a diagonal ball from
Connie Lewis (Outer Cove, Newfoundland/Gonzaga ) and slid a shot through the legs of Maddy Bunnel to make it 1-0 Knights.
"It was some of the same issues we had last weekend, we took the game for granted after we went up 1-0 and allowed the back in giving up two soft goals," said head coach
Eric Teepe. "The fact that we started off with the wrong mindset hopefully showed them that you cannot just turn it on."
Mount St. Mary's (5-12-1, 1-7 NEC) tied the game at one in the 34th minute on Gianna Pomykacz's third of the season. Pomykacz collected a loose ball in the box after a corner kick from Bianca Gillman.
The Knights had a pair of corner kicks late in the first half but no shots came from the set pieces.
In the first eight minutes of the second half, the Knights had four shots—only one forced a save from Bunnell—and the score remained tied.
Just past the hour mark, the Mountaineers took the lead for good when a cross from Jenna West deflected in off a Knight defender.
"We were unable to create any positive chances in the second half. We will have to regroup and refocus now for a very good Saint Francis U team."
Jackson Bennett (Toronto, Ontario/Humberside Collegiate Institute) had a header go wide in the 71st minute and
Daria Jones (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) forced Bunnell to make a save two minutes but was turned away.
Meghan Griffin (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) had the last official shot for the Knights in the 85th minute but it was wide.
Postseason play awaits the Knights for the fourth straight season. The Knights will travel to Loretto, Pennsylvania for the Northeast Conference Tournament, which will be hosted by Saint Francis U, who won a tiebreaker with Central Connecticut.
The semifinal match between Fairleigh Dickinson and Saint Francis U will be on Friday at 2 p.m. in Loretto. The game will be shown live on NECFrontRow.com.
