Women's Soccer Hands Central Connecticut First NEC Loss, 2-0

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Two second half goals were the difference for Fairleigh Dickinson as they handed Central Connecticut its first Northeast Conference loss of the season with a 2-0 win on Sunday afternoon.

Fairleigh Dickinson (6-10-1, 4-1-1 NEC) got goals from Jessi Reinhardt (Freiburg, Germany/Burggymansium) and Stasi Torchia (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary's) inside the first 10 minutes of the second half to knock off Central Connecticut (7-9-1, 5-1 NEC). The Knights were the first NEC team to score on the Blue Devils this season

"It was a great comeback after our game on Friday," said head coach Eric Teepe. "Today we were ready to play for the full 90 minutes. This conference is so tight that you cannot take plays off and it was a great picture for them to see. We still have one more to get into the tournament and maybe two to get first or second."

Reinhardt's goal was her fourth of the season and came when the sophomore fired a shot from 30 yards out the got past Nicki Turley at the far left post. Torchia put a header past Turley that came on the end of a Dara Battistoni (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) cross in the 51st minute. The goal was Torchia's first of the season and her career.

The Knights were able to control possession throughout the contest and limited the Blue Devils to eight shots, four of which tested Amanda Fitzgerald (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) and the freshman made all four stops to earn her third shutout of the season.

"It was more we did attacking and keeping possession and because of that, we did not need to defend them the whole game. It was good we got the first goal and withstood their pressure afterward. Today was a good team win."

Two of the four shots on goal for the Knights found their way. Meghan Griffin (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) forced Turley to make a play on a cross from the right side. Fairleigh Dickinson also had some looks from corners but those did not lead to shots on goal.

Fairleigh Dickinson and Central Connecticut played the opening 45 minutes with each not being able to find the back of the net despite chances for both sides.

The Knights' best chance came when Reinhardt was stopped by Nicki Turley on a header of a Fairleigh Dickinson corner in the 21st minute. Carla Jackson had the best chance for the Bue Devils when her chip shot got over Fitzgerald but went wide left of the far post.

Late in the opening stanza, The Knights had three shots—from Kristina Neri (San Jose, Calif./Santa Teresa), Jackson Bennett (Toronto, Ontario/Humberside Collegiate Institute) and Julia Shea (Carmel, N.Y./Mahopac) that were all blocked by knees of Central Connecticut defenders off a corner.

The final weekend of the 2016 regular season starts with a home game against LIU Brooklyn on Friday night at University Stadium. It will be senior as the women's soccer program will honor the four graduating seniors prior to the game.
