TEANECK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team battled Saint Francis U to a 1-1 draw at University Stadium on Friday night.
Senior forward
Enver Caymaz (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) netted the goal for the Knights (3-8-2, 1-1-2 NEC), who led 1-0 until Dominic Ramirez found the equalizer for the Red Flash (9-5-1, 2-1-1 NEC) in the 74
th minute.
The draw keeps the NEC standings in place as the Knights remain in the fourth and final postseason spot, while the Red Flash sit in third.
Saint Francis outshot the Knights 30-15 in the contest and held a 7-4 edge in on-target tries as the two teams struggled to find the mark.
Julian Murillo Toro (Cali, Colombia/Francisco de Pio XII) played the full 110 minutes in net for Fairleigh Dickinson and made six saves in the draw. With the tie, the junior goalkeeper's record moved to 2-2-1 on the season.
The Knights were the aggressor early on as reigning NEC Rookie of the Week
David Bokumabi (Oberthal, Germany/Saarbrucken) and
Itai Erez (Petah Tikva, Israel /Ahad Ha'am) each earned two chances, which sailed wide.
Then, at the 7:49 mark, some nifty passing led to the Knights' goal.
Leo Dalesandro (Queens, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) began the sequence by splitting a pair of Red Flash defenders with a through ball to
Jamie Leddy (Bateman’s Bay, Australia/Bateman’s Bay), who promptly one-touched a pass to the center of the box toward Caymaz. Caymaz pressured the Red Flash goalkeeper Marcus Rojas and pushed the ball over the goal line for a 1-0 Fairleigh Dickinson lead. The senior forward's goal was his team-leading fourth of the season.
Caymaz nearly struck again in the 23
rd minute when he eluded Rojas and sent a would-be goal toward the net, however, Jack Webber cleared the ball off of the goal line for the Red Flash and kept the deficit at one.
Minutes later,
Daniel Lasarte (Madrid, Spain/Defiance (Ohio)) found himself open in the box for a golden opportunity but he hooked his shot left of the net.
Both defenses blocked shot attempts throughout the remainder of the game, especially last year's NEC Defensive Player of the Year Francis de Vries, who thwarted three of the Knights' shots.
Leading 1-0 in the second half, Murillo Toro made an outstanding stop on a set piece by the Red Flash to preserve the one-goal lead. De Vries navigated a low lying shot through the Knights' defense toward the bottom left corner of the net but Murillo Toro made a diving stop and prevented the score.
Dominic Ramirez broke through at the 73:26 mark for Saint Francis with his second goal of the season. Ramirez was on the receiving end of a well-timed cross from teammate Stefan Sjekloca and tapped in the pass for the equalizer.
Despite several chances over the remainder of regulation and two extra-time frames, neither team was able to score again as the draw was finalized and the two squads each took home a point.
The Knights will look to maintain their place in the conference standings when they return to action this Sunday, October 23 against Central Connecticut State. Start time is set for 3 p.m. in New Britain, Conn.
