HACKENSACK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team defeated NJIT 3-0 on Wednesday evening.
The Knights took set one 25-23 before winning the second set 25-20. They closed out the match with a 25-23 win the third set. Fairleigh Dickinson improves to 3-22 on the season.
In the first set, the Knights and Highlanders traded points and the set was tied multiple times. Fairleigh Dickinson finally too a multiple-point advantage on a kill from
Caroline Laton (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) but the Highlanders scored four points in a row to tie things up at 11. The teams continued to battle and keep things within one point until a block from
Rebecca Sabol (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) and
Annabel Reyes (Teaneck, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) gave the Knights the 21-19 edge. The Highlanders tied the set up again, 23-23, but a block from Laton and a kill from
Carly O'Sullivan (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) gave the Knights the two points they needed to take the set and go up 1-0 in the match.
Fairleigh Dickinson used its momentum to open up the second set on a 3-0 run. The Knights continued to build and an eventual kill from O'Sullivan gave the Knights a 7-2 advantage. They maintained their edge until the Highlanders scored four straight, tying things up at 12. The Knights again took a lead but NJIT came back to tie the set again, this time at 18. The Knights ended the second set on a 7-2 run to go up 2-0 in the match.
Fairleigh Dickinson took a 3-1 lead to open things up in the third set before the Highlanders came back to tie things up, 4-4. The set was again tied at six but the Knights scored four in a row to take a 10-6 lead. NJIT cut the lead to 13-12 but the Knights started to pull away, building up a 2015 lead following a block from
Taylor Wyckoff (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) and Laton. This prompted the Highlanders to call a timeout and they eventually cut things to just one point. A Fairleigh Dickinson attack error put the score at 24-23 but a Wyckoff kill ended things and gave the Knights their third win of the season.
The Knights had a solid day at the net, tallying 11 total blocks. Laton led the blocking effort with seven. She also had a team-high seven kills and one service ace.
Kirstin Trabert (Corona, Calif./Norco) recorded a double-double with 18 assists and 12 digs.
The Knights are back in action this weekend with two home Northeast Conference contests. First, they host LIU Brooklyn on Saturday before facing St. Francis Brooklyn on Sunday – both at 1 p.m.
