Box Score HACKENSACK, N.J. – Senior
Maddie Gibbons (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview Heights) connected on a kill from classmate
Allison Butler (Plano, Texas/Plano) to seal the 3-0 sweep over the Hornets of Delaware State, Friday, September 25. In the last game of their brief two game home-stand, the Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team see themselves at a 6-8 mark on the season having won their last two games before embarking on conference play. DSU falls to 2-9 on the year.
The beginning set remained competitive between both clubs through the first half of play. The Knights never trailed until a kill by Delaware State's Jasmine Jackson allowed for the Hornets to own their first lead, 13-12. However, just as the Hornets began to pull away 20-16, two kills from the Knights'
Rebecca Sabol (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) and
Alex Lolland (Auburn, Calif./Del Oro) and a pair of Hornets miscues evened the score at 20 apiece. A few points later on yet another Lolland kill, FDU came out on top 25-23.
The second set reflected much of the first since each team traded points to start. This time, FDU pulled ahead first 14-10 forcing a Hornets timeout. Still, the break could not slow down the Knights momentum and the Hornets eventually fell 25-19.
The third set favored the Knights as they dominated most of it. Two consecutive kills for sophomore
Carly O'Sullivan (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) awarded FDU a four point lead causing Delaware State to take a timeout, 12-9. From there, the Knights held a clear advantage until the Hornets began to close in on the hole only down two, 17-15. With a sweep in close range, DSU continued to fight back and finally tied it all up, 21-21. Junior
Caroline Laton (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) connected on a kill from Butler and the Knights never looked back. FDU won the set 25-22. Now with six wins, the Knights match their win total from last season.
Freshman
Savanna Wray (Peoria, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) racked in a team-high 11 digs. Butler and sophomore
Josephine Gallagher (Aurora, Ill./Rosary) tallied 21 and 15 assists respectively. Lolland finished with nine kills while Gibbons (8), Sullivan (6), sophomore
Taylor Wyckoff (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) (5) and Laton (5) added to the game.
Next, the Knights will face conference foe Sacred Heart on the road on Sunday, September 27. The match will begin promptly at 1 p.m.
