Box Score PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team dropped a tough four-set match on the road to La Salle (5-7) with scores of 25-17, 25-19, 25-15 and 25-17 on Wednesday, September 16. La Salle improves to 5-7 on the season, while the Knights fall to 4-8 overall.
In the opening set, the Explorers jumped out to an early lead on the Knights and ultimately took the set 25-17.
In the beginning of the second, both squads traded points with the largest lead of the set standing at three. Kills by sophomore
Alex Lolland (Auburn, Calif./Del Oro) and junior
Caroline Laton (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) opened the lead and ultimately helped the Knights own a 24-19 advantage. FDU totaled 15 kills this set including one during set point from senior
Maddie Gibbons (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview Heights)' on an assist from senior
Allison Butler (Plano, Texas/Plano). This gave the Knights the set, 25-19 and evened things up at one set apiece.
For the third set, the Explorers led with a score of 16-10 before forcing the Knights to take a timeout. Out of the break, sophomore
Taylor Wyckoff (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) landed a kill to help the Knights cut into the deficit. La Salle however proved to be too much and won the set, 25-15 and went up 2-1 on the night.
The fourth set saw the Explorers claim a 5-3 lead before an attack error and kill by Laton knotted the score, 5-5. Each team traded points until La Salle opened up a six point lead, 17-11. Laton led a surge on a pair of back to back kills cutting the Knights' deficit to five, 20-15 but La Salle would not let up. They took the fourth set 25-17 and the match 3-1. Laton finished with a team-high 16 kills on the night with a .600 hitting percentage.
Senior
Corey Lostetter (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) and sophomore Carly O' Sullivan finished with 18 and 10 digs respectively. Sophomore
Josephine Gallagher (Aurora, Ill./Rosary) contributed 11 assists on the match behind a team-high 25 from Butler.
Next week, the FDU women's volleyball team returns home for a brief two game home stand. First the Knights will host Rider on Wednesday, September 23 at 7 p.m. at Stratis Arena and then Delaware State Friday, September 25 at 6 p.m.
