Box Score 2 PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday at Providence College. The Knights (4-7) were swept by Providence and then blanked Saint Peter's in three sets.
The matches were part of the 11th Annual Friar Classic, a two-day tournament played at Providence College.
FDU vs. Providence
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team fell to 3-7 on the season with a loss to Providence (6-4) during the second and final day of the Friar Classic on Friday, September 12. The Knights fell in three sets.
In the morning matchup, the Friars gained the lead early in the first set, 3-2 and were able to keep it throughout ultimately driving them to a 25-18 set win.
Providence held onto the momentum in set two and went ahead 11-6. The Knights rallied for three points to cut the deficit but could not stop the Friars' attack. Providence went on to win the second set 25-17.
In the third set, a kill by senior
Maddie Gibbons (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview Heights) and a Friars attack error put the Knights within only one, 10-9. Providence proved to be too much for FDU as they could not rally back in enough time and lost the set 25-16.
Freshman
Savanna Wray (Peoria, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) contributed a team-high 10 digs on the match. Sophomore classmates
Taylor Wyckoff (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) and
Carly O'Sullivan (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) finished with six kills apiece. Senior setter
Allison Butler (Plano, Texas/Plano) totaled 13 assists on the match.
Later on today, the Knights will face Saint Peter's to conclude play in the tournament at 3 p.m.
FDU vs. Saint Peter's
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team was victorious against Saint Peter's sweeping them, 3-0 in their final match of the 11th Annual Friar Classic tournament. With the victory, the Knights have won three of their last four matches and improve to 4-7 on the season, while the Peacocks fall to 1-6 overall.
The first set could have gone either way tied at 28-28. Two crucial attack errors on behalf of Saint Peter's costed them the set and gave FDU the win, 30-28.
Saint Peter's was the first to score in the second set but after a tie score of 2-2, the Knights went on 4-1 run and never gave up the lead. Out of a Peacocks' timeout with FDU in front, 19-15, the Knights scored six of the next nine points to take the set, 25-18 and a 2-0 advantage on the match.
A block by sophomore classmates
Taylor Wyckoff (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) and
Alex Lolland (Auburn, Calif./Del Oro) forced an attack error for the Peacocks' Kaitlyn Sitton and awarded the Knights the largest lead of the third set at six, 19-13. Kills by sophomore
Carly O'Sullivan (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) and senior
Maddie Gibbons (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview Heights) brought the score to set point, 24-18. On a kill by sophomore
Taylor Wyckoff (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) from senior
Grace Hong (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford), FDU sealed the set win at 25-18 and the match 3-0.
Lolland and junior
Caroline Laton (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) recorded eight and nine kills respectively behind a team-high 10 kills from Gibbons. Three players tallied nine digs including Butler, senior
Corey Lostetter (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson), and sophomore
Josephine Gallagher (Aurora, Ill./Rosary). Freshman
Savanna Wray (Peoria, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) concluded the match with 11 digs.
FDU will be back in action Wednesday, September 16 at La Salle University at 3 p.m.
