Volleyball Sweeps Hampton in Season Opener

Box Score
LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Fairleigh Dickinson volleyball team posted a 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-21) shutout win over the Hampton Pirates in their 2015 season debut at the Liberty Invitational presented by La Quinta Inns & Suites.

The Knights (1-0) put together late runs in all three sets to come from behind and win.

The Knights edged Hampton in the first set after alternating runs by each team.

Hampton seized control early in the second set, but the Knights would rally to take the lead.  A late nine-point run propelled the Knights to their first lead (17-16) and eventually a 22-16 advantage.  FDU came away with another victory as sophomore Taylor Wyckoff (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) capped the set with a kill.

With FDU up 2-0, the Pirates kept the Knights from carrying their momentum into the third set, but FDU managed to come from behind and pull away again, clinching a 3-0 victory.

FDU was led by sophomore Alex Lolland (Auburn, Calif./Del Oro) who registered eight kills in the match and a team-high hitting percentage.  Freshman Rebecca Sabol (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) notched six kills and senior Maddie Gibbons (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview Heights) connected for five to help lead the offense.

Sophomore Josephine Gallagher (Aurora, Ill./Rosary) and senior Allison Butler (Plano, Texas/Plano) recorded 15 and 13 assists, respectively.

Defensively, senior Corey Lostetter (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) led the Knights with 12 digs.  Freshman Savanna Wray (Peoria, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) and sophomore Carly O'Sullivan (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) also posted double-digit digs in the match with 10.  With Wyckoff totaling six blocks, including a pair of solo blocks.

Having to play three matches over two days, the Knights are facing a tough non-conference slate to open play.

Next up, FDU will play at Liberty University on Saturday, August 29th, at 12:30 p.m., and then later on in the day, at 4:30 p.m., against the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to conclude the tournament.
