Box Score 2 STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Fairleigh Dickinson softball team swept a doubleheader at Wagner College on Monday afternoon. The Knights improve to 2-2 in Northeast Conference action with the victories over the Seahawks.
Megan Reiner (Los Angeles, Calif./John Marshall) earned the victory in both games with FDU winning each by a 2-1 score.
FDU finished the day with a 5-11 record for the season. Wagner falls to 5-12 and 0-4 in NEC play.
Reiner pitched all 14 innings for the Knights and allowed just two runs on eight hits. She also struck out seven Seahawk batters in each game.
Reiner pitched all seven innings in game one for the complete game victory. She allowed just four hits and one run. She struck out seven Seahawks and only walked two. Reiner faced just 29 batters in the contest.
In the second game, Reiner delivered another seven innings for her eighth complete game of the season. She again allowed just one run on four hits, while striking out seven. Reiner issued just one walk and faced only 27 batters.
Reiner allowed her one run in the fifth inning of game one and in the fourth inning of the second game. She improves to 5-5 on the season with the victories.
The Knights' offense got off to a fast start in first inning of game one.
Madelaine Wilen (Bakerfield, Calif./Ridgeview High School) opened the game with a double and quickly moved to third on a ground out by
Alex Portesi (Chino, Calif./Don Antonio Lugo).
Angelique Nieves (Union City, N.J./High Tech High School) drew a walk to setup first and third with one out. Nieves stole second and, on the same play, Wilen was able to score on an error by the Wagner catcher.
Cheryl Lopez (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) added to FDU's lead by connecting on a solo home run to lead off the fifth inning. The homer was the second of the season for Lopez.
In the second game the FDU offense got on the board in the top of the third inning. With one out, Wilen tripled to right and then was chased home on a double by Portesi.
Wagner tied the game in the fourth inning, but FDU was able to answer with a go ahead run in the seventh. Freshman
Nicole Bellini (Staten Island, NY /Tottenville High School) doubled to lead off the seventh and Wilen followed with a double on a three-two count to plate what would be the winning run.
In the bottom of the frame, the Seahawks put runners on second and third with one out, but Reiner worked out of the jam by striking out Hana Gilbert and getting Brianna Tredway on a ground ball back to the circle.
The Knights recorded 15 hits on the day, while limiting the Seahawks to just eight.
Lopez was two-for-three with an RBI and a run scored. Portesi was four-for-seven on the day and drove in a run. Wilen was three-for-six with an RBI and two runs scored.
Courtney Slye (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley High School) was three-for-five on the day, including two-for-two in the second game.
The Knights will return to action on Friday against LIU Brooklyn. The games are scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch at the FDU Softball Field.
