Volleyball Captures Four-Set Victory Over Manhattan

Box Score

HACKENSACK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team ended its three-game home stand defeating the Jaspers of Manhattan on Wednesday, October 7 at Stratis Arena. With the win, the Knights passed last seasons win total and improve to 7-11 on the season while Manhattan drops to 10-8 on the year.

Both squads traded points back and forth to open set one.  A kill by the freshman Rebecca Sabol (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) gave the Knights what was the largest lead of either team of three, 18-15. Then the Jaspers began to close in on the gap until two consecutive kills from Sabol and junior Caroline Laton (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) clinched the set at 25-22.

For the second set, the Knights credited a .640 hitting percentage-the highest of the match to the Jaspers' .115. This broke open an unforgivable lead for FDU as they managed to sustain it. At 14-8, the Knights went on a 7-0 run forcing the Jaspers into a 12 point deficit and would not let up. One of sophomore Taylor Wyckoff (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont)'s seven kills on a pass from classmate Josephine Gallagher (Aurora, Ill./Rosary) would ultimately put them up two sets to none having won the set 25-12.

Manhattan's momentum picked up to start the third set by winning 13 of the first 16 points. In an effort to bridge the gap, Gallagher assisted on another kill, this time for Sabol sparking a 7-3 rally for Fairleigh Dickinson. However, with the Knights still behind by six, Manhattan managed to maintain its control and pick up the set win 25-13.

In the fourth set, the Knights opened up an early 4-0 lead to force a Jaspers' timeout. The Jaspers would rally back and eventually knot the game at 9-9. From there, the set remained close until two consecutive kills for sophomore Alex Lolland (Auburn, Calif./Del Oro) broke open yet another lead, 17-12. Lolland would finish the match with a game-high 15 kills including a .600 hitting clip in the fourth set.  Closing out the set on a 8-4 run would award the Knights the set victory 25-16 and the game, 3-1.

Sophomore Carly O'Sullivan (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) tabbed 10 kills and 12 digs. Freshman Savanna Wray (Peoria, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) and senior Corey Lostetter (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) totaled 16 and 10 digs respectively. Sabol ended with 10 kills while Allison Butler (Plano, Texas/Plano) (31) and Gallagher (15) contributed assists on the night.

Next, the Knights will travel to face Saint Francis University in a conference matchup on Saturday, October 10. The game is slated for a 1 p.m. start and will be streamed live on NEC Front Row.
