W. Volleyball Wins First Match of the Season

BRONX, N.Y. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team (1-5) opened play at the Rose Hill Classic, hosted by Fordham, on Friday. The Knights defeated the host Rams in the opening match of the day to claim their first victory of the season, before falling to Northeastern in four sets to conclude the the day with a record of 1-1.

FDU won the first match of the day against Fordham in four sets by scores of 25-13, 18-25, 25-23 and 25-18.

The first set of the match started out as a back and forth battle between both teams. After a kill from sophomore Caroline Laton (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon), the Knights took off. FDU would go on a 12-1 run to finish off the Rams to take a 1-0 lead. Fordham would show some resilience in the second set of the match to come back and win, 25-18. The third set of the match would have the teams battling the entire set. An ace by senior Deborah Hong (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) would give the Knights the win for a 2-1 lead. FDU would have to fight in the final set of the match. After two quick points by Fordham, the Knights would take the lead and never look back, winning 25-18.

Freshman Carly O'Sullivan (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) continues to dominate on all aspects of the game after recording her first double-double of her career with 10 kills and 14 digs. Hong would also be a big help on defense recording 14 digs.

The second match of the day would have FDU's defense stepping up to keep them in the hunt. Hong, O'Sullivan and junior Allison Butler (Plano, Texas/Plano) would all record double-digit digs, with 12, 10 and 18 respectively. O'Sullivan, Laton and freshman Madisen Phipps (Boise, Idaho/Timberline) all recorded six kills in the match.

The Knights return to action Saturday, Sept. 6 to take on Rider at 10:30 a.m. at the Rose Hill Classic.
