W. Volleyball Falls To NJIT in Home Opener

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson's women's volleyball team fell to NJIT on Wednesday night, 3-1, in nonconference action, as the Highlanders won by scores of 25-22, 21-25, 25-20 and 28-26. With the victory, NJIT improves to 4-8 on the season, while the Knights fall to 2-10 overall.

The match would start with FDU ahead 2-0 on a kill by sophomore Caroline Laton (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon). The Knights would lose the lead as the Highlanders would go on a 6-4 run bring the set score to 7-7. FDU would take back the lead on two kills from freshman Carly O'Sullivan (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) and Laton, bringing the set score to 13-12. The lead would then bounce back-and-fourth between the two teams with the score tying at 15, 18 and 19. NJIT would go on a three-point run on two FDU attack errors putting them ahead 22-19. Two kills by Laton would bring the Knights within one point of the Highlanders, but a kill by NJIT's Tess Albyn would seal the deal 25-22.

The second set would have the both teams battling to control the match. They would have the scored tied at 1, 4, 7 and 8, before NJIT would go on a 4-2 point run bringing the score to 12-10. The Knights would them go on a hot streak taking nine of the next 11 points, with kills by freshman Taylor Wyckoff (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont), senior Hanifa Addi (Springdale, Md./Charles H. Flowers), freshman Alex Lolland (Auburn, Calif./Del Oro), and a service ace from O'Sullivan giving them a 19-14 lead. The closest that the Highlanders would get would be two points, but kills from Addi and Lolland would have the FDU capture it's first win of the night.

The Knights would take the first point of the third set on a kill by O'Sullivan, but NJIT would go on a 5-2 run bringing it ahead 5-3. FDU would go on an 11-7 run to tie the score up with kills by Lolland, O'Sullivan and junior Allison Butler (Plano, Texas/Plano). The Highlanders would then take control of the set by taking the next six of the seven points scored bringing their lead to 18-13. FDU would go on a 4-2 point run to bring the set to 20-17 with kills by Laton and Lolland, but NJIT would have four kills to close out the set 25-20.

For the fourth set in a row the Knights would take the first point of the match on a kill by Addi. NJIT would then jump out to an early 8-4 lead with three attack errors from FDU. The Highlanders would out score FDU 7-4 bringing the set score to 9-15, but the Knights would surge to take the lead 16-15 with kills by Lolland, junior Maddie Gibbons (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview Heights), and a service ace from O'Sullivan. The lead would then exchange between the teams as they tied the score seven more times before a kill by NJIT's Nina Vukotic and an attack error by FDU would close the match 28-26.
