SAN DIEGO -- The Fairleigh Dickinson softball team dropped both contests Friday in the opening day of the USD San Diego Tournament I, hosted by the University of San Diego, at the USD Softball Complex. The Knights lost to Weber State in their opener, 7-1, before falling to the hosts in the nightcap, 2-1. FDU falls to 5-9 on the season, while the Wildcats and the Toreros improve to 13-9 and 11-10 on the season, respectively.
In the opener, the Knights' pitching was bitten by a Wildcat offense that pounded out 12 hits. Weber State had four players enter Friday's contest batting over .300 and the consistency from the WSU offense continued against FDU.
Weber State jumped on starting pitcher
Samantha Lemm (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional High School) for three runs in the second inning to knock Lemm out of the game. Malia Campos (3-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI) opened the scoring with a single through the left side to score Rudi Barrios. Campos later scored on an Alyson Kulp single to right center. The final run of the inning was scored on Jasmine Ioane's single to left field to score Kulp.
Lemm (0-2) was charged with the loss after lasting 1.2 innings, giving up three runs on six hits.
Freshman
Cheryl Lopez (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) entered the game for the Knights, but Campos and Ioane continued their attack on FDU. Leading 4-1 in the seventh, Campos recorded her second RBI with another single to left field to score Barrios for the second time. Ioane then doubled to left field to put the game away with two more runs, extending the lead to 7-1
Kylee Colvin had a break-out game for Weber State, throwing six innings and working around eight hits to give up no earned runs.
FDU racked up eight hits but could not string them together to keep themselves in the game. The Knights' lone run was scored in the fifth on junior
Angelique Nieves (Union City, N.J./High Tech High School) RBI single to center field to score freshman
Alex Portesi (Chino, Calif./Don Antonio Lugo).
In the nightcap, the city of San Diego was treated to a pitching duel and a late rally Friday evening but the Knights fell to San Diego, 2-1.
The Toreros struck first in the bottom of the fourth to take a 1-0 advantage when Danielle Mavridis reached on a FDU error to score Mary Grabowski. San Diego scored its second run, which was the eventual game winner, on an RBI double by Danielle Mavridis down the right-field life to score Olivia
Sandusky.
The Knights struggled to find the base paths, only recording one hit and two total base runners up to the seventh inning due to strong pitching by Cassidy Coleman. FDU rallied in the seventh when junior
Cindy Zamudio (Wilmington, Calif./Redondo Union) singled up the middle to score Nieves with one out to make it a one-run game. Coleman then buckled down to strike out the next two batters to end the rally and the game for the Knights. She went the distance for San Diego, giving up two hits while striking out eight.
Loren Stavrou (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson Classical High School) (0-3) was charged with the loss but turned in a solid performance for the Knights in her complete game performance. She allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits and struck out three.
FDU will return to action Saturday to take on Seattle at 1 p.m. before taking on Weber State again at 3:30 p.m.
