Softball to Play Five in San Diego This Weekend

SAN DIEGO -- The Fairleigh Dickinson softball team (5-7) will conclude their two week trip to the Golden State to compete in the USD Tournament I in San Diego starting Friday. The Knights will play five contests in the three day tournament; two against the host team, San Diego, two against Weber State, and one against Seattle.

Last Time Out
FDU dropped both games of a doubleheader to UC Riverside on Wednesday being ascended past the Highlanders, 6-2 and 4-2. Junior Cindy Zamudio (Wilmington, Calif./Redondo Union) went 3-for-6 combined in the two games, with three runs scored and one RBI, which came on a solo home run. Zamudio has sparked the offense since making her season debut March 7 at the Mustang Classic, batting .389 to go along with a .778 slugging percentage in seven games. Classmate Angelique Nieves (Union City, N.J./High Tech High School) still leads all hitters with a .394 batting average, five doubles, and eight RBI.

Weber State
2014 Season: 11-7

Series History: First Meeting
What You Need To Know: FDU will likely run into right-hander MaCauley Flint, who has been named the Big Sky Conference Pitcher of the Week three times already this season. Flint (7-2) leads the conference in ERA (1.18), strikeouts (74), and opposing batting average (.158). The Wildcats' strong start of the season also can be credited to the offense, with four players hitting .300 over the first 18 games of the season. Brooke Silva (.365 batting average, 23 hits), Alyson Kulp (.364 batting average, 11 extra base hits, 5 home runs, 15 RBI, 11 runs scored), and Jasmine Loane (.333 batting average, 19 RBI, 5 home runs) are all players the Knights will see twice this weekend.

San Diego
2014 Season:
8-10
When: Friday March 14 - 9 p.m., Sunday March 16 - 2:30 p.m.
Where: San Diego, Calif. (USD Softball Complex)
Series History: First Meeting
What You Need To Know: The Toreros are two games under .500 at 8-10 but recently took down UC Riverside in two games, who the Knights struggled against on Wednesday. In its recent success, USD has been led by Mary Grabowski ,who was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week on March 10. In her week of play, Grabowski batted .389 with six RBI. The sophomore leads the team in most offense categories, batting average (.333), RBI (11), total bases (25), slugging percentage (.596) and on-base percentage (.380). Cassidy Coleman is another player that has struck fire, owning a 1.50 ERA in her last nine appearances while holding opposing batters to a .167 average and striking out 53.
 
Seattle
2014 Season: 10-15
When: Saturday March 15 - 1 p.m.
Where: San Diego, Calif. (USD Softball Complex)
Series History: First Meeting
What You Need To Know: The Knights may not know what to expect from the Red hawks, who recently won nine of their last 11 games, but also went on a nine-game losing streak. Seattle's recent success is because of Isabella Geronimo, who was named espnW's Player of the Week (Feb.24-March 2). During the week of play, Geronimo batted .652 (15-for-23), with five doubles and nine runs scored. The Red hawks have five players with batting averages over .320 in a minimum of 65 at-bats. Bubba Morrow is another Red hawk to look out for, who has a .368 batting average, five home runs, 25 RBI and 20 runs scored.

 The Knights will make their way back to Hackensack, N.J. for a doubleheader against former Northeast Conference foe Quinnipiac on Thursday, March 20. First pitch of the FDU's home opener is slated for noon at the FDU Softball Field.
