EMMITSBURG, Md. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball team were defeated, 70-35, by Mount St. Mary's in Northeast Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Knott Arena. With the loss, the Knights fall to 2-24 (1-13 NEC) on the season while the Mountaineers improve to 16-11 (11-4 NEC).
The Knights had three leads in the first half, the last of which came on a
Brianna Thomas (Baldwin, N.Y./St. John the Baptist Diocesan) 3-pointer to put her team up 22-21. That field goal capped an impressive 13-5 run for FDU but it would also spark a large Mount St. Mary's run. The Mountaineers finished the first half on a 11-2 run to take their largest lead of the game into halftime with the score 32-24.
Junior
Amanda Andrades (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) made the first basket of the second half but that would be the last point the team scored over the following 10 minutes. Mount St. Mary's stretched their run from late in the first half all the way to 30-4 including an incredible 19 unanswered points on 72.7% shooting.
The Mount would outscore the visitors 19-9 the rest of the way.
The Knights shot just 27.5% from the field in the game and 2-of-9 from long distance. Andrades was the lone Knight in double-figures with 12 to go with her five assists. Freshman
Kiana Brown (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) tallied eight points and sophomore
Kelsey Cruz (Chester, Va./Lloyd C. Bird) added seven. FDU were outrebounded 42-29.
Senior Rachel Mathews lead a very balanced Mount St. Mary's offense with 15 points and five rebounds. Senior Sydney Henderson was held without a point in the field half but helped inspire her team's staggering run with 11 second-half points. The Mount finished the second half with a 65% field goal percentage, including 6-of-10 from long range, and finished at 46.2% from the field overall.
FDU wraps up its' Northeast Conference road swing with a visit to LIU Brooklyn on Monday night, February 24th. Tipoff in Brooklyn is scheduled for 7 p.m.
