W. Volleyball Falls to NJIT in Four Sets

NEWARK, N.J.  --  The Fairleigh Dickinson's women's volleyball team fell to NJIT in a nonconference match in four sets with scores of 27-29, 25-16, 30-28 and 25-17. With the win the Highlanders improve to 9-19 overall, while the Knights fall to 6-20 overall and remain at 4-7 in NEC play.

The match starts with the Highlanders taking an early 5-1 lead after senior Hanifa Addi (Springdale, Md./Charles H. Flowers) opened the match with a kill. The Knights battle back to tie the score at 5-5 after taking five points unanswered with a kill from freshman Taylor Wyckoff (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) and two kills from freshman Alex Lolland (Auburn, Calif./Del Oro). NJIT went off taking 11 of the next 13 points scored which includes a kill from Addi, to bring the score to 16-7. FDU answers going on a 9-1 point run with a kill from senior Deborah Hong (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) and a service ace from junior Corey Lostetter (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) to close the gap making the score 17-16. The Highlanders extend their leading to 22-19 after taking five of the next eight points scored. The Knights gain the first lead of the night going on a 6-2 point run with a kill from Wyckoff and Lolland.  FDU closes the set on a 4-3 point run with a kill from junior Maddie Gibbons (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview Heights) to take the set 29-27.

The second set has the Knights taking the lead 4-3 with a kill from Lolland. FDU extends its lead taking seven of the next 12 points scored with kills from Gibbons and Lolland along with a service ace from Lostetter bringing the score to 11-8. NJIT turns the table going on a 9-3 point run which included a kill form Wyckoff to take the lead 17-14. The Highlanders extend their lead taking five of the next seven points scored to bring the score to 22-16. NJIT would have three unanswered points to close the set at 25-16.

The Knights take an early 4-1 lead to open the third set with a kill from sophomore Caroline Laton (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon). The Highlanders take seven of the next 11 points scored to knot the score at 8-8 with a kill from Addi and Wyckoff. The teams split the next eight points to bring the score to 12-12 with a kill from freshman Carly O'Sullivan (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) and Gibbons. FDU regains the lead after taking seven of the next 13 points scored with a kill from Addi and Wyckoff as well as a service ace from Laton to make the score 19-18. NJIT would bounce back going on a 6-3 point run, which includes a kill from O'Sullivan and a service ace from Hong to bring the score of the match to 24-22. The Knights snag the lead after taking five of the next seven points scored with two kills from O'Sullivan and Laton to bring the score to 27-26. The Highlanders close the set on a 4-1 point run with a kill from Wyckoff to close the set at 30-28.

The final set starts with the two teams splitting the first eight points with a kill from O'Sullivan to make the score 4-4. NJIT takes a commanding 12-8 point lead after going on an 8-4 point run with a kill from Addi. The Knights knot the score up at 15-15 after taking seven of the next 10 points scored with a kill from Wyckoff, two kills from O'Sullivan and a service ace form junior Grace Hong (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford). The Highlanders close the match going on a 10-2 point run to bring the final score to 25-17.

Wyckoff and O'Sullivan would both lead the offense for FDU recording seven kills each. At the net if would be junior Allison Butler (Plano, Texas/Plano) with a team high 19 assists, while Addi would have a team-leading six blocks. On defense D. Hong would lead the squad with 20 digs, followed by Butler with 11 digs of her own.

FDU will return to action on Sunday Nov. 9, when they will host Sacred Heart in the Stratis Arena in Hackensack, N.J. with first serve slated for 3 p.m.
