Box Score HACKENSACK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson's women's volleyball team fell to LIU Brooklyn in three sets with scores of 25-10, 25-18 and 25-19 on Saturday Oct. 4. With the win the Blackbirds improve to 11-5 overall and 2-0 in Northeast Conference play, while the Knights fall to 2-14 overall and 0-3 in NEC play.
LIU would start the match with an early 3-1 lead, with FDU's lone point coming off of a kill from freshman
Carly O'Sullivan (Bogota, N.J./Bogota). The Blackbirds would go on a 7-3 point run pushing their lead to 10-4, with kills from sophomore
Caroline Laton (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) and freshman
Alex Lolland (Auburn, Calif./Del Oro). The Knights would score only five more points in the set with kills from junior
Maddie Gibbons (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview Heights), senior
Deborah Hong (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) and freshman
Taylor Wyckoff (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont), as LIU would go off closing the set at 25-10.
The second set would have the Blackbirds jumping out to another 2-0 lead, but FDU would surge ahead tying the score at 2, 6 and 8 before gaining its first lead of the match at 9-8 on an LIU error. The Blackbirds regain the lead after taking five of the next six points scored, bringing the score to 13-10. After a time out from the Knights they would regain control on an attack error from LIU, but it wouldn't last as the Blackbirds would take control taking six of the next seven points scored bringing the set to 19-12. FDU would bounce back taking the next three points with a kill by Lolland to bring the score to 19-15. The Knights would gain three more points with kills from Lolland and Wyckoff, but it wouldn't be enough as LIU closed the set 25-18.
The final set would have the Blackbirds take an early 4-2 lead, but a kill from senior
Hanifa Addi (Springdale, Md./Charles H. Flowers) and a service ace from O'Sullivan would knot up the score at 4-4. The two teams would battle back-and-fourth tying the score at 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 15 points but a service error from FDU would give the Blackbirds a 16-15 lead at that they wouldn't give up. The Knights would score three more points in the set with kills from Laton, Lolland and O'Sullivan, as LIU closed out the match with a 25-19 victory.
Lolland would lead the way from the offense scoring a team-high 10 kills. At the net for the Knights, it was junior
Allison Butler (Plano, Texas/Plano) who led the squad with 22 assists, while O'Sullivan had led the team on defense with 12 digs.
FDU will return to NEC action in the Stratis Arena in Hackensack N.J. on Sunday, Oct. 5 to host St. Francis Brooklyn, with first serve slated for 1 p.m.
