W. Volleyball Takes Down St. Francis Brooklyn in Three Sets

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y.  --  The Fairleigh Dickinson's women's volleyball team defeated St. Francis Brooklyn in with sets with scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-21. With the win the Knights improve to 6-18 overall and 4-6 in NEC play while the Terriers fall to 2-23 overall and 0-9 NEC play.

The match starts with FDU bursting out to a 6-0 lead  with a kill from junior Allison Butler (Plano, Texas/Plano), a kill from sophomore Caroline Laton (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) and two service aces from junior Corey Lostetter (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson). The teams spilt the next eight points with a kill from freshman Carly O'Sullivan (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) to bring the score to 10-4. The Knights would take seven of the next nine points scored with a service ace from O'Sullivan to push their lead to 17-6. St. Francis Brooklyn would make a run taking nine of the next 13 points scored to close the gap 15-21. Going on a 5-2 point run, the Terriers shrink the lead to 23-20 which would include two kills from junior Maddie Gibbons (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview Heights). The Knights would close the door going on a 2-1 point run with a kill from freshman Taylor Wyckoff (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) with the final score being 25-21.

The second set had St. Francis Brooklyn jumping out to a 4-0 lead. FDU would retaliate going on a 11-2 point run with five kills from O'Sullivan to bring the score to 11-6. The team would split the next 12 points with a kill from O'Sullivan, a kill from Gibbons and two kills from Laton to bring the score to 17-12. The Terriers would outscore the Knights seven to five, including kills from Gibbons, O'Sullivan and Butler to bring the score to 22-19. FDU closed the set outscoring St. Francis Brooklyn 3-2 with a kill from Laton and O'Sullivan to make the score 25-21.

The final set had the Knights taking a commanding 7-2 lead with two service aces from Butler. The Terriers close the gap two after going on a 8-5 run which would include two kills from freshman Madisen Phipps (Boise, Idaho/Timberline) to bring the score to 12-10.  The teams split the next 12 points with two kills from Gibbons to bring the score to 19-17. FDU outscored St. Francis Brooklyn 4-3 to push its lead to 23-20 with two kills from Laton. The Knights close out the match with two kills by O'Sullivan in a 2-1 run bringing the final score to 25-21.

O'Sullivan led the team recording her 11th double-double of the season with 11 kills and 14 digs. At the net Butler would lead the team with 23 assists, while senior Hanifa Addi (Springdale, Md./Charles H. Flowers) would have a team-leading four blocks. On defense it was senior Deborah Hong (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) that lead the squad with 22 digs, followed by Lostetter with 12 digs.

FDU will return to action on Saturday Nov. 1, where they will travel to Brooklyn, N.Y. to take on NEC powerhouse LIU Brooklyn, with first serve slated for 7 p.m.
