Box Score HACKENSACK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson's women's volleyball team fell to Robert Morris in three sets with scores 25-20, 26-24 and 40-38. With the win the Colonials improve to 9-15 overall and 7-1 in NEC play, while the Knights fall to 4-18 overall and 2-6 in NEC play.
The match starts with Robert Morris going on a 5-1 point run with a kill from junior
Allison Butler (Plano, Texas/Plano). The teams would split the next four points with a kill from senior
Hanifa Addi (Springdale, Md./Charles H. Flowers) and freshman
Carly O'Sullivan (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) to bring the score to 7-3. The Colonials would go on a 6-3 run which includes a kill from junior
Maddie Gibbons (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview Heights) to bring the score to 13-6. The Knights would outscore Robert Morris 6-5 with kills from sophomore
Caroline Laton (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon), freshman
Taylor Wyckoff (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) and three kills from O'Sullivan to bring the score to 12-18. The teams would split the next six points with kills from Laton and O'Sullivan to push the score to 21-15. FDU would try to make a comeback taking four of the next five points scored with a kill from Laton and O'Sullivan to bring the score to bring the score to 22-19. Robert Morris would close out the set going on a 3-1 run with a kill from Addi to close the set at 25-20.
The second set would have the Colonials jumping out to another early 5-1 lead which would include a kill from O'Sullivan. The Knights would come back taking seven of the next ten points scored with kills from O'Sullivan, Addi, Gibbons and Wyckoff to tie the score at 8-8. The teams would evenly exchange the next 10 points with kills from Wyckoff and O'Sullivan to bring the score to 13-13. The teams would battle tying the score eight more times at 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 20, 21 and 22 before the Colonials would go on a 4-2 point run to close the set at 26-24.
The final set would be one for the record books at FDU as the highest scoring set since the NCAA changed the scoring to 25 points in 2008. The set would start with the Knights getting their first lead of the day by going on a 3-0 point run with two kills from O'Sullivan. The Colonials would strike back going on a 5-1 point run which would include a kill from O'Sullivan to bring the score to 5-4. FDU regains the lead of 11-7 on a 7-2 point run with kills from Addi, O'Sullivan, Gibbons and Wyckoff. Robert Morris reclaimed the lead after taking nine of the next 10 points scored to bring the score to 16-12. FDU would tie it all up at 19 points after outscoring the Colonials 7-3 with a kill from Laton and Addi, along with three kills from O'Sullivan. The Knights would outscore Robert Morris 3-2 with a kills from O'Sullivan and Wyckoff to regain the lead at 23-21. After going on a 4-2 run the Colonials would tie the score up at 25-25, which would start the real battle. The Knights would gain set point seven more times in the match while Robert Morris would have it six times. The Colonials would end up going on a three point run to close to the set with a final score of 40-38.
O'Sullivan would have set a career-high 25 kills in route to gaining her ninth career double-double with 15 digs. At the net for the FDU Butler would lead the team with 41 assists, while Addi, Laton and Gibbons would all record five blocks each. On defense it was junior
Corey Lostetter (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) that lead the team with 19 digs, followed by senior
Deborah Hong (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) with 16 kills.
FDU will return to action Sunday Oct. 5 in the Stratis Arena in Hackensack, N.J. The Knights will host Saint Francis U with first serve slated for 3 p.m.
