HACKENSACK, N.J. -- Senior
Sidney Sanders Jr. 's career-high 31 points coupled with a season-high 14 three pointers gave the Fairleigh Dickinson men's basketball team a convincing 86-67 win over Hofstra on Sunday at Stratis Arena. With the victory, the Knights snap a four-game losing skid to move to 4-10 on the season, while the Pride fall to 4-10 overall.
The victory avenges an earlier loss this season when FDU fell at Hofstra, 80-58, on Nov. 10.
Sanders Jr., who paced five double-digit scorers for the Knights, scored his 31 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field while knocking down 13-of-17 free throws (career bests).
Freshman
Matt MacDonald netted 13 points (4-of-7 from three) and added a game-high three steals, while junior
Mustafaa Jones added 12 points on four three's.
Senior
Mathias Seilund chipped in 10 points, as he made both of his three-point attempts to go along a game-high eight rebounds, which ties a career high, and freshman
Scott Kingsley tallied a career-high 10 points after making 2-of-3 three's.
"What can I say, that was a complete team effort, but we were led by Sid Sanders, who was sensational all night long," Head Coach
Greg Herenda said. "After a long layoff (15 days), I was not sure how we would respond, but we had great energy and intensity on both ends of the floor."
Trailing 7-5 early on, FDU scored seven unanswered en route to an 8-2 spurt, as a three from MacDonald gave the Knights a 15-9 lead at the 14:56 mark.
The Pride would come back and cut the lead to one on two occasions before retaking the lead at 24-23 with 8:08 remaining in the first half.
FDU would then take the lead for good on an old-fashion three-point play from Sanders Jr, which gave the Knights a 26-24 advantage.
Leading by three at 32-29, FDU outscored Hofstra, 17-6, over the final 5:04 of the half. Sanders Jr. scored seven of his 20 first-half points during the run, and Kingsley drained a trey ball right as the first half expired to give the Knights a 49-35 lead heading into the locker room.
FDU shot a sizzling 54.8 percent (17-of-31) over the opening 20 minutes, knocked down 6-of-12 from distance and converted 9-of-12 from the charity stripe, while the Pride converted at a 43.5 percent clip (10-of-23, 2-of-10 from three) and made 13-of-16 free throws. The Knights also forced eight turnovers and only committed three.
"We have been banged up in practice with some nagging injuries, but our bench stepped up and guys filled in," Herenda said. "
Scott Kingsley gave us a great boost, and Xavier's (Harris) first dunk of the game really set the tone for the entire game."
Eventually FDU would outscore Hofstra, 34-12, as it started the second half on a 17-6 run. During the stretch, the Knights netted 5-of-6 from behind-the-arc, including their first three attempts of the second half.
After a pair of free throws from Sanders Jr. gave FDU a 71-46 lead at the 13:13 mark, the Pride would score 10 straight points to cut the deficit to 71-56 with 9:02 left in the game.
But the Knights would regroup by scoring the next six points and would never be threatened in cruising to the 86-67 victory.
FDU continued its torrid shooting in the second half (10-of-20, 8-of-15 from three) to finish the contest shooting 52.9 percent (27-of-51) from the field. The Knights also knocked down 51.9 percent (14-of-27) of its three's while going 18-of-25 from the free throw line. FDU also assisted on 15 of its 27 baskets and tied a season low in turnovers with eight.
"It just shows how much we have improved since the beginning of the season," Herenda said. "Hofstra is a talented team and very-well coached. I am really proud of my team."
Hofstra, who made 26-of-36 free throws, finished the game at 38.8 percent (19-of-49) from the floor and only 34.6 percent in the second half. The Pride, who shot over 52 percent in the first meeting, also made only 3-of-18 from distance. Hofstra also finished with eight turnovers and edged the Knights on the glass, 31-30.
Zeke Upshaw paced the Pride with 22 points, while Jamall Robinson added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
FDU will now focus its attention on Northeast Conference play and will host Mount St. Mary's on Thursday, Jan. 9 for a 7 p.m. tipoff at Stratis Arena.
