W. Volleyball Looks for Success at Lafayette Tournament

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team will take to the road on Friday for the second of three weekend tournaments in Pennsylvania to start the season when it participates in the Lafayette College Tournament, which includes co-hosts Lafayette and Lehigh, Saint Peter's and Wright State.

On Friday, the Knights will play on the campus of Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa. against the Mountain Hawks at 5 p.m. before playing Saint Peter's at 7 p.m. The next day, FDU will take a short 20-minute trip to the Lafayette campus in Easton, Pa. for the final two matches of the tournament, first playing the host Leopards at 9 a.m. before concluding the weekend with a 2:30 p.m. match against Wright State.

Last Time Out
The Knights hosted Rider in their home opener on Sept. 4 and were swept 3-0 in the contest against their in-state rivals. Sophomore Allison Butler (Plano, Texas/Plano) dished out a season-high 24 assists to take her season total over the century mark (104). Junior Deborah Hong (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) led the squad with 12 digs and is now tied for the team lead of 51 with sophomore Corey Lostetter (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson), who added eight digs in Wednesday' match. Freshman Courtney Kovensky (Highland, Calif./Citrus Valley) led FDU with eight kills in her home debut.

Lehigh
2013 Season: 2-1 (All Home)
2012 Recap: (12-14; 8-6 Patriot League) - No postseason

Last Meeting:  September 18, 2009 – Lehigh 3 FDU 1
What You Need To Know: Bob Bertucci, recently having won his 700th game as a coach, has a very good and deep squad at Lehigh. Sixteen Mountain Hawks saw significant minutes last weekend and several underclassmen impressed. The team is led by Senior Libero Rachel Charles, who compiled 50 digs over last weekend's games to give her 1,322 career digs. She needs just 36 to top the all-time list at Lehigh, which could be accomplished this upcoming weekend.

Saint Peter's
2013 Season: 0-4 (All Away)
2012 Recap: (1-31; 0-18 MAAC) - No postseason
When: Friday, September 6 – 7 p.m.
Where: Bethlehem, Pa. (Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall)
Series History:  FDU leads 4-1 over the last five meetings
Last Meeting:  October 5, 2011 – FDU 3 Saint Peter's 0
What You Need To Know: The Peahens are led in kills and digs by senior Laura Reinhardt, who has 25 and 22, respectively. Junior Kristina Baehr supplies the hitters and has tallied 84 assists through the opening four matches.

Lafayette
2013 Season: 2-1 (All Neutral)
2012 Recap: (9-17; 2-13 Patriot League) - No postseason
When: Saturday, September 7 – 9 a.m.

Series History:  Lafayette leads 4-1 over the last five meetings

What You Need To Know: Sophomore outside hitter Brianne Giangiobbe was named to the All-La Salle Tournament Team despite only playing in two of matches, recording 17 kills, 9 digs and three blocks. Senior co-captain and Mahwah, N.J. native Karissa Ciliento has had a tremendous opening three matches to the season totaling 39 kills and 23 digs.

Wright State
2013 Season: 1-4 (four neutral, one away)
2012 Recap: (2-30; 0-14 Horizon League) - No postseason
When: Saturday, September 7 – 2:30 p.m.
Where: Easton, Pa. (Kirby Sports Center)
Series History:  First meeting
What You Need To Know: The Raiders are led offensively by Senior Heidi Splinter, who has tallied 70 kills through the team's first five matches. She is also second on the team with 53 digs.

Up Next
The Knights will have a week off before traveling to Lewisburg, Pa. to participate in the Bucknell Invitational (Sept. 13-14), where they will face the host Bison, Canisius and Rider.
