Softball Splits Doubleheader at Army to Conclude 2013 Season

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University softball team concluded the 2013 season with a split doubleheader at Army on Saturday, May 4. After falling 8-1 in game one, the Knights took a 1-0 victory in 10 innings in game two to conclude the season with an overall record of 23-21.

The Black Knights scored early in the opener to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Angelique Nieves (Union City, N.J./High Tech High School) responded for the Knights with a solo home run to left field to tie the game at one in the second.

Army reclaimed the lead with a run scored on a sacrifice fly in the third and maintained the lead through the rest of the game.

The Black Knights added one run in the fourth and fifth and sealed the win with four runs on three hits and two walks in the sixth.

Samantha Lemm (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional High School) finished the season 6-6 with the loss. She allowed three earned runs on seven hits, with one strikeout in four innings of work. 

The Knights saw hits from Madelaine Wilen (Bakerfield, Calif./Ridgeview High School), Julia Northcutt (Irvine, Calif./Northwood High School) and Nieves in the first game.

Game two saw nine combined hits but no runs through the first seven innings of action.

In the top of the 10th, Wilen reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base before advancing to third on a single by Northcutt. Senior Mikayla Fernandez (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) singled to left-center field to drive in a run and give the Knights a 1-0 advantage. 

Starting pitcher Loren Stavrou (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson Classical High School) forced three ground outs in the bottom of the 10th to give FDU the win. Stavrou earned the victory to conclude the season with a record of  to 8-5. She pitched 10 complete innings, while walking just one and striking out three.

Northcutt, Fernandez and Nieves combined for the Knights' seven hits in game two.

The series at Army concluded the Knights' 2013 season in which the team produced one of its best seasons to date.
