TEANECK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team (2-1-0) will look to make it three wins in a row on Friday night when they host Albany at University Stadium with kickoff set for 7 p.m. The Burgundy and Blue currently share the No. 6 ranking in the
National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) North Atlantic Poll.
The Knights are coming off a thrilling come-from-behind 4-3 victory at NJIT this past Saturday night. Trailing 3-0 at the half, FDU scored four goals over the final 24 minutes of the match to escape with the victory. Senior
Jack McVey (Douglas, Isle of Man/St. Ninian’s ) started the scoring with a penalty kick in the 67th minute to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Five minutes later, junior
David Cornwell (London, England/Drayton Manor) found sophomore
Nico Wright (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Jamaica College), whose header found the back of the net to cut the lead to 3-2. Barley two minutes after his first goal, Wright corralled a ball from freshman
Sam Durkot (Centereach, N.Y./Newfield) in front of the net and drilled a tough-angled shot to tie the game at three.
In the 86th minute, Wright delivered a beautiful cross from the left side to Cornwell, who was wide open in front of the goal and scored easily to give the Knights a 4-3 lead, which they hung on to over the final four minutes for the victory.
Albany, who was picked to finish in a tie for sixth in the eight-team America East, is off to a 2-1-0 start this season. The Great Danes started with a 2-0 loss at Syracuse before winning at home over Towson in overtime (3-2) and at Yale (2-0) this past Monday. They return eight starters from a team who finished 6-10-3 and made a trip to the America East semifinals a season ago.
The Great Danes are the second America East team FDU will play this year. The Knights fell to America East favorite Stony Brook 5-0 in their season opener on Aug. 24.
Anthony Rozzano and Brandon Wilson have scored two goals to lead Albany's offense. Goalkeeper Tim Allen has recorded 25 saves and allowed four goals en route to posting a 2-1-0 record.
FDU and Albany will be playing each other for the first time in 52 years and fifth time overall. The Knights won the previous four matches, which took place from 1957-1960. FDU defeated the Great Danes 2-1 back in 1960.
