TEANECK, N.J – The Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team (3-2-1) will look to get back into the win column this weekend at the Princeton Invitational in Princeton, N.J. The Knights will take on a pair of Ivy League opponents with Penn being first on Friday at 5 p.m. before concluding with Princeton on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. All matches will take place at Roberts Stadium.
FDU stayed at No. 5 in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)
North Atlantic Poll after a 2-2 draw with nationally-ranked UAB and a 1-0 loss to Memphis last weekend at the UAB “Soccer For A Cure” Classic in Birmingham, Ala.
The Knights led 2-0 against host UAB late in the match but saw their lead evaporate in the final 12 minutes of regulation and settled for one point after neither team scored in the overtime periods. Sophomore
Nico Wright (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Jamaica College) scored the first goal off a header from fellow classmate
Anders Vest-Hansen (Nykobing, Denmark/Celf)'s perfect corner kick barely in the ninth minute. Wright was then credited with an assist on sophomore Godfred Baffi's goal in the 59th minute, which put FDU up 2-0.
Against Memphis, the Knights started out sluggish but had a couple of opportunities to score in the second half. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper
Alfredo Malaret (Caracas, Venezuela/Cumbres De Caracas), who was playing his first career match, played excellent, allowing only a penalty kick in the first half, which he almost saved.
Penn comes into Friday's match winless at 0-6-0, has been outscored 17-9 but has played a tough schedule, losing to Lafayette (3-2, a team FDU beat 1-0), New Hampshire (2-1 double OT), Air Force (2-1), Hartford (2-1), Villanova (5-3) and at No. 12 Georgetown (3-1).
The Quakers are led by senior midfielder/forward Travis Cantrell (3 g) and sophomore midfielder/forward Duke Lacroix (2 g, 1 a). Goalies Tyler Kinn (two starts) and Max Kurtzman (four starts) have split time over the first six matches.
Penn leads the all-time series over FDU 4-0-0, which dates back to 1972. The last time the two programs faced each other was in 2004 when the Quakers escaped with a 1-0 victory.
Princeton is off to a 2-3-0 start but has scored only three goals on the season. The Tigers started out the year with a 2-1 win at Seton Hall before being shutout over their next three matches (3-0 at No. 12 St. John's, 2-0 vs. Rutgers, 1-0 vs. No. 12 Georgetown). Princeton rebounded with a 1-0 victory at Villanova this past Sunday.
Three different players have found the back of the net for the Tigers, and they have also split time with their goalkeepers as Seth MacMillan (two starts, 1-1-0) and Max Gallin (three starts, 1-2-0) have each picked up a victory between the pipes.
Princeton leads the all-time series over the Knights 13-6-2. However, the Knights won 2-1 in overtime last season thanks to a game-winning penalty kick by
Jack McVey (Douglas, Isle of Man/St. Ninian’s ).
Rider is the other team competing in the tournament, but FDU will not face its Garden State rival.
