The Fairleigh Dickinson University softball team split a set of games on Friday, March 16 with a 3-1 win over Youngstown State University and a 2-5 loss to Houston Baptist.
With the win, the Knights improve to 11-4 on the season, with a 5-4 record at the Rebel Spring Games.
After allowing an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning, the Knights used back-to-back homeruns to take the win over Youngstown State.
After Caitlin Bradac (Garden Grove, CA/Garden Grove) singled to right field to begin the bottom of the fourth, freshman Bryana Dorado (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard) smacked a homerun to deep center field to five the Knights a 2-0 lead. As the next batter, Kirsten Shreve (Kent, WA/Kentwood) extended the Knights lead to 3-0 on a homerun to left field.
The hit was Dorado's second career homerun. Shreve leads the team with three on the season. The duo both went 2-for-3 on the day.
Freshman Megan Reiner (Los Angeles, Calif./John Marshall) earned the win on the mound, she is now 6-0 in her rookie season. Reiner allowed no earned runs on five hits through seven innings. She struck out six and walked just one batter.
In the Knights' second game they faced Houston Baptist. The Huskies took the lead early with two runs on two hits in the top of the first inning. Cindy Zamudio (Wilmington, Calif./Redondo Union) walked in the Knights' first at bat and advanced to third on two groundouts. A single from freshman Jordan Needle (Camarillo, CA/La Reina College Prep) drove Zamudio in to put the Knights on the board.
One run in the second and two runs in the third put Houston Baptist up 5-1 after three innings. Another hit from Needle placed a runner on first in the top of the sixth. A single from Shreve advanced Needle to second before a single from Elizabeth Woidt drove Needle home to give the Knights two runs.
The Knights were unable to score through the rest of the game and fell to the Huskies, 2-5.
Zamudio, Shreve and Roney each went 2-for-3 against Houston Baptist. Woidt and Needle compiled the Knights' only two RBIs.
Maire Shaughnessy (Culpeper, Va./Highland) took the loss on the mound for FDU. She allowed five runs on six hits in two innings of work. Bradac pitched the final five innings. She allowed five hits but gave up no runs.
The Knights conclude play at the Rebel Spring Games on Saturday, March 17. They will play Columbia at 9:00 am and finish with Howard at 1:00 pm.
