Fairfield Box Score Utah Valley Box Score
The Fairleigh Dickinson University softball team split a pair of games Tuesday morning in Kissimmee, FL. A 4-0 loss to Fairfield and a 3-1 win over Utah Valley pushes the Knights' record to 9-2 on the season.
The Stags took the lead early on a string of hits in the top of the first inning. A sacrifice fly drove home a runner from third base to give Fairfield a 1-0 lead.
The Knights held Fairfield scoreless through the second, third and fourth innings but were unable to compile enough hits to get on the board.
In the fifth, Fairfield added one run on a walk and an RBI double to give them a 2-0 lead.
Sophomore Maria Roney (Anacortes, WA/Anacortes) hit a double to right center in the bottom of the fifth. Kirsten Shreve (Kent, WA/Kentwood) hit a far fly ball to center field in what looked to be a game tying hit, but the ball was caught at the center-field wall to cut FDU's chance of scoring.
Roney's hit was joined by just two others as the Knights fell to Fairfield, 4-0. Maire Shaughnessy (Culpeper, Va./Highland) was tagged with the loss in the game, allowing four runs on five hits.
In game two, the Knights were the team to put the first run on the scoreboard. After a double to left center by Caitlin Bradac (Garden Grove, CA/Garden Grove), Bryana Dorado (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard) was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Roney reached base on an error that advanced all runners, giving Shreve a chance to extend the Knights' lead with the bases loaded.
Shreve was hit by a pitch to drive home a run to give the Knights an early 1-0 lead.
Utah Valley responded in the bottom of the third inning when a double to left center was driven home by another double.
The Knights reclaimed the advantage in the game after Paige Castro (Elk Grove, CA/Franklin) and Megan Reiner (Los Angeles, Calif./John Marshall) reached base and completed a double steal of second and third base. Cindy Zamudio (Wilmington, Calif./Redondo Union) walked as the next batter to load the bases. Elizabeth Woidt worked the count to 2-2 before reaching base on an error by the second baseman. Reaching first allowed Woidt to drive home two runs to increase FDU's lead to 3-1.
FDU held on to the lead through the end of the seventh inning to move to 9-2 on the season.
Reiner earned her fourth win of the season as she allowed only one run on four hits. She struck out six and walked just one batter in a complete game effort.
Woidt led the team with two RBIs. Woidt, Zamudio, Castro and Bradac each recorded a hit for FDU.
The Knights will return to action on Wednesday, March 14 with morning games against Rider and Cleveland State.
