The Fairleigh Dickinson University softball team defeated the Jaspers of Manhattan College, 6-1, Monday, March 12 in Kissimmee, FL. With the win, the Knights improve to 8-1 on the season, while the Jaspers fall to 0-5.
Manhattan got started early, drawing a walk with one out in the top of the first. A single down the left-field line drove home the runner to give the Jaspers a 1-0 lead. Jordan Needle (Camarillo, CA/La Reina College Prep), Paige Castro (Elk Grove, CA/Franklin) and Caitlin Bradac (Garden Grove, CA/Garden Grove) converted a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning and cut the Manhattan momentum.
Freshman Cindy Zamudio (Wilmington, Calif./Redondo Union) singled to start the bottom of the first for FDU. Elizabeth Woidt's double to right center drove Zamudio home to tie the game at one. As the next batter Bradac hit a double to right center to drive home Woidt and give FDU their first advantage of the game.
Lauren Hamilton (Woodinville, WA/Woodinville) reached on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the second. She advanced to third on a single from Zamudio and scored when Woidt reached base on an error by the Manhattan third baseman.
Needle drew a walk to start the bottom of the third inning. She advanced to second when Maria Roney (Anacortes, WA/Anacortes) reached first on a dropped fly ball to center field. Kirsten Shreve (Kent, WA/Kentwood) secured the Knights lead with a three-run homer to left center field.
After four innings of work, Bradac relieved Megan Reiner (Los Angeles, Calif./John Marshall) in the circle. Bradac held the Jaspers to no runs and no hits in the final three innings of play.
Reiner earned the win, her third of the season, with one run on three hits. She walked three and struck out six. Bradac picked up her first save of the year with three strikeouts in three innings.
Shreve led the Knights with two hits in three at bats. She added three RBIs on her homerun. Woidt went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored.
The Knights will face Fairfield and Utah Valley at 9:00 am and 11:00 am on Tuesday, March 13.
