HACKENSACK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team will look to end its two-match skid with 1 p.m. Northeast Conference matches at Stratis Arena against Saint Francis PA on Saturday, Oct. 13, and Robert Morris on Sunday, Oct. 14.
The Knights (7-12, 3-3 NEC) have gone 5-6 this season in matches following a loss and are in a three-way tie for fourth place with Sacred Heart and Saturday's opponent Saint Francis PA (7-12, 3-3 NEC). FDU's Sunday opponent, Robert Morris (9-12, 5-1 NEC) stands alone in third place in the NEC.
LAST TIME OUT
FDU is trying to bounce back following a 3-0 Wednesday night loss at LIU Brooklyn. Senior captain
Meaghan Wheeler (Chatsworth, CA/Chaminade College Prep) led the way for the Knights with team highs in kills (11) and digs (7). In matches played through Oct. 7, Wheeler ranked seventh in the nation with 4.61 kills per set and 12th nationally with 5.15 points per set.
Freshman
Allison Butler (Plano, Texas/Plano) dished out 21 assists against LIU to bring her total to 629 on the year, while fellow classmate
Maddie Gibbons (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview Heights) is now one kill shy of 100 after picking up four on Wednesday.
SAINT FRANCIS PA
Last season, FDU went on the road to Loretto, Pa. and beat the Red Flash 3-0 then followed up with a 3-2 win at home later in the year. SFPA is fresh off a 3-1 win over St. Francis NY on Oct. 7. The Red Flash dropped the opening set but won the final three for the victory. Elizabeth Williams has a team-best 185 kills and is one of five Saint Francis players with at least 100 kills.
The Red Flash are holding their opponents to a .192 hitting percentage, the second best mark in the NEC. Saturday's opponent leads the NEC with 119 aces, headlined by Williams, who is third in the conference with 0.38 per set.
ROBERT MORRIS
The Knights suffered 3-1 and 3-0 losses to Robert Morris in 2011. The Colonials dropped the first four matches of the season, losing 3-0 to New Hampshire, Maryland and Villanova and 3-1 at Bucknell. Since then RMU has gone 9-8 and has wins in five of six matches entering the weekend.
Before last Sunday's loss to LIU Brooklyn, the Colonials had knocked off five straight NEC opponents.
Senior Lindsey Monger is second in the NEC with 3.65 kills per set and leads her team with 259 kills this season. Becky Jay is one of three players in the conference to average at least one block per set. She sits in second overall with 1.14 per set.
Robert Morris and FDU are the only teams in the NEC with two players in the conference's top 10 in digs per set. Dianis Mercado is third at 4.05 digs per set and Erica Robb checks in at 10th with 2.75.
UP NEXT
After this weekend's home matches, the Burgundy and Blue will hit the road for two matches next weekend. On Saturday, Oct. 20, FDU will take on Quinnipiac in Hamden, Conn. and travel to New Britain, Conn. to play Central Connecticut State on Sunday. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
