The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team will conclude its four-match road swing with a pair of NEC contests this weekend. The Knights will square off with Robert Morris in Moon Township, PA on Saturday, Oct. 1, before moving on to Loretto, PA to take on Saint Francis PA the following day. Both matches are scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m.
The Knights (9-5, 0-1) have hit a dry spell with two-straight losses after winning eight of their previous nine matches. Most recently, FDU dropped a 3-0 decision at Manhattan on Wednesday.
Meaghan Wheeler (Chatsworth, CA/Chaminade College Prep)'s 12 kills and
Sarah Willey (Abingdon, MD/Bel Air)'s 12 assists could not help the Knights from suffering their fifth loss of the year.
On the season, Wheeler has been a force with a team-high 251 kills, while
Kelsey Semler (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic)'s 256 digs and
Sarah Berkland (Newton, MA/Newton North)'s 47 total blocks have solidified the defense.
The Knights take on a Robert Morris (7-10, 3-0) squad that lost nine of its first 10 matches of the 2011 campaign. Since their bumpy start, the Colonials have won six of their last seven including four in a row.
Robert Morris, the 2010 NEC tournament runner-up, sits atop the conference with a perfect 3-0 record with wins over Long Island, St. Francis NY and the Knights' Sunday opponent, Saint Francis PA. Lindsey Monger compiled a match-high 23 kills in their 3-0 win the Red Flash on Thursday.
Hannah Veith ranks third in the NEC with a .324 hitting percentage and has racked up 178 kills on the season for the Colonials.
On Sunday, the Knights will square off with the Red Flash (6-12, 1-2), a team coming off two losses in a row.
Lauren Wingard and Elizabeth Williams each have more than 135 kills on the season for the Red Flash, while most of their assists come from Logan Meinert (425) and Kierstin Kiser (123).
Saint Francis and the Knights have common opponents in Lafayette and Rider. The Red Flash went 2-0 in those matches, while FDU went 3-0, beating Rider twice.
In 2010, the Knights made the trip to western Pennsylvania in mid-November to close out their season, beating Robert Morris, 3-1, on Nov. 13 and falling to Saint Francis by a 3-1 score the next day. FDU also made the trip in 2009, beginning with a 3-1 loss to the Red Flash followed by a 3-0 loss at Robert Morris.
On Wednesday, the Knights will return home to Stratis Arena for their second home match of the season when they take on Saint Peter's on Oct. 5. The first serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
