W. Volleyball drops 3-0 decision to Sacred Heart in NEC Opener

The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team saw its three-match winning streak come to end on Saturday with a 3-0 road loss in their NEC opener at Sacred Heart in Fairfield, CT.

The Knights (9-4, 0-1 NEC) dropped the first set by a 25-19 score before falling in the next two by identical 25-21 margins. The Pioneers (10-4, 1-0 NEC) remain unbeaten at home this season with four wins at the Pitt Center.

FDU led for the early portion of the first set and held a 13-11 advantage before SHU scored five-straight points and eventually took a 25-19 win.

The second set remained close throughout until the Pioneers' put the set away with a 6-2 run to claim a 25-21 win and a 2-0 lead. In the final set, the Knights again kept the score tight, but Sacred Heart came away with another 25-21 win for a 3-0 final.

Meaghan Wheeler (Chatsworth, CA/Chaminade College Prep) was the lone Knight to reach double-digit kills with 11. Sarah Willey (Abingdon, MD/Bel Air) had all 25 of FDU's assists on the night, and Kelsey Semler (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) tied for a match high with 13 digs.

Around the net, Sarah Berkland (Newton, MA/Newton North) recorded six kills to go with five block assists and a solo block on defense.

FDU hit .092 as a team, while the Pioneers had a .175 hitting percentage. Sacred Heart was led on offense by Kimmee Rolender's 12 kills and Alisa Mesa's 17 assists.

The Knights will continue their road trip with a Wednesday, Sept. 28, meeting at Manhattan. The non-conference match is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m.
