The Fairleigh Dickinson University softball team split a pair of games with Wagner College on April 17 in Staten Island, NY. The Knights fell 1-0 in game one but responded with a 3-0 win in game two to move to 21-15 on the season (6-8 NEC). The Seahawks are now 6-22 on the season (4-8 NEC).
Game one was a pitchers dual with just four hits between both teams. Wagner shortstop Ashley Olsen hit a home-run to center field to give the Seahawks a 1-0 lead. Through the next five innings the Knights allowed just one more hit and no runs.
The Knights recorded just two hits, a fifth-inning single to left-center by Maire Shaughnessy (Culpeper, Va./Highland) and a single up the middle by Caitlin Bradac (Garden Grove, CA/Garden Grove) in the seventh inning. The Seahawks allowed two errors and struck out four batters.
Shaughnessy pitched a complete game for the Knights, she struck out no batters and allowed no walks.
The Knights began the second game with hard hitting, forcing two Seahawk errors in the first inning. Through the next four innings FDU picked up just three hits and no runs while Wagner added four hits and no runs.
Kirsten Shreve (Kent, WA/Kentwood) walked to begin the fifth inning. After stealing second, Shreve scored when Marikka Benson (Lacey, WA/Timberline) doubled and reached third on an error by the right fielder. Later in the inning, double from Bradac scored Benson to give the Knights a 2-0 advantage.
The Knights increased their lead to 3-0 in the sixth after Meghan Russell (Bristow, OK/Bristow) singled to centerfield and was driven home on a double from Paige Castro (Elk Grove, CA/Franklin).
Bradac picked up her tenth win of the season with a complete game. She allowed just five hits and two walks, while striking out three batters.
The Knights take a break from NEC play to travel to Manhattan for a double-header on Wednesday, April 20. FDU will then host Fordham on Thursday, April 21 for a double-header beginning at 3:00 pm.
